As a model, she has dedicated her career to "cause-related modeling," or working with more environmentally and socially-conscious companies and brands, which has earned her the moniker of "The Eco-Model." Oakes was the face for the Levis 5.01 Volunteer Campaign as well as for the organic jeans launch with Replay Jeans, and is also the brand ambassador for the new Be Carbon Neutral Campaign, supported by designers and climate change scientists. Over the last two years, Outside Magazine recognized her as one the "Top Environmental All-Stars," Vanity Fair highlighted her as an influential "Global Citizen," Cosmopolitan Magazines named her "Fun Fearless Female of 2007," Amica Magazine called her one of the "Top 20 Trendsetters under 40," and CNN highlighted her as a "Young Person Who Rocks."
Oakes has been integral in assisting numerous fashion designers and organic beauty companies garner mainstream attention. Over the last six years, she has largely helped shape the sustainable design industry through her modeling, speaking, consulting and writing. Oakes writes a sustainable fashion editorial called, "Behind the Label" for Lucire Magazine, reports from the eco-fashion frontlines in a monthly column for Grist Magazine and Treehugger.com, writes an "Ask Summer Rayne" column on Planetgreen.com, and produces S4, a sustainability trends in fashion newsletter, subscribed by over 30 countries, 30+ universities, multiple press outlets, and companies such as, Wal-Mart, Levis, Eileen Fisher, GAP, Vanity Fair Group, Limited Brands, Nau, Quicksilver, Urban Outfitters and others.
With a background in environmental research, ranging from studies in human health and toxic organic contaminants to stream water quality and mine reclamation, Oakes has consulted for a number of high-profile clients on environmental communications, market research and sustainable business strategies, including apparel and beauty companies, cable networks, environmental foundations, universities, and magazines.
