Bio

Born in Pusan, South Korea, in 1968

From 1987, he had studied composition from Yongjin Kim and Kangyul Yi at Seoul National University.

The late 80's were the period of rapid changes and social confusion. He deeply struggled with the real functions of music in the social atmosphere.

At that time, he became to focus on Jazz as a kind of solution, and imported some Jazz idioms into his music to reach more people as a musician. The first trial for that was "Caricatured Bach" for Brass Sextet.

In 1933, he was accepted by the graduate school of Seoul National University and joined the Korean Army as well. For the first time, he experienced a Popular band and was accustomed to the Drumset that is the most unique part of the Jazz and popular music.

Returning to the school, he was getting to realize what is composing. He composed "Assimilation" for Piano solo, "Weighted Randomness" for Piano and Violin, "The Fruit of The Spirit" for Woodwind Quintet, "Vision" for Mixed choir, Piano and Vibraphone in that period.

The main interest of that period is "Fractal". "Fractal" is a theory that finds
orders and rules from the matters like shorelines and natural figures which are random at a glance. Through this theory, I tried to make a tone system that produces random pitches according to strict rules.

The other interest is "MAX", music computer program. By this software, he could control every variables which are necessary for a certain musical work and directly applyed a computer to composition. As a result of that, "Weighted Randomness" could be made. In fact, this was a 100% computer-based composition, and the composer's duty was just making a program to fulfil the composing.

From 2000 to 2004, he tought composition and ear-training, sight-singing at some colleges, but they are all Jazz Music Schools. From 90's, the needs for Jazz and comercial music began to increase gradually. However, well-organized matrials and sources for Jazz educaion are not efficeint. Therefor, he decided his mind up to go to main land of Jazz, U.S.

In 2004, Boston, He started to study at New England Conservatory which is 150-year-old school. He choosed that school because he likes such an antique style and prefer George Russell to Chalrie Parker.

In this period, Almost every works are Jazz stuffs. "Far and Near" for Piano and Vibraphone, and "The Ten" for 10 players, and Jazz song "Always forever", and "Jerich Fell Down!" for Jazz Orchestra, and Jazz Suite "Brazil" for Piano and Vibraphone.

Now, he lives in Malden near Boston with his wife Jiyeon Choi, little son Sean.

These things are only a beginning.
