"Chi-town's top open mic emcees to dominate common's AAHH Fest"

Elizabeth “Sunnie Storm” Fuqua is one of about 20 young people hand selected to perform at the early show for Sunday’s AAHH Fest, planned for Union Park on the city’s West Side.

The AAHH Fest is a combination pep rally and concert put together by a consortium of Chicago-based rappers and their kid-centric foundations. Common, Rhymefest and Kanye West are pretty much the big names behind the fest, which was moved from Jackson Park on the South Side to Union Park – presumably to help with logistics for the big event.

But let’s get back to Fuqua, 21, who is an atypical Chicago songstress and emcee. She scored a spot on the main stage after performing at an event sponsored by West’s charity, Donda’s House and Common’s Charity, the Common Ground Foundation, earlier this year. She’s also a senior at Northwestern University who also happens to be a lyricist who kills it at open mic nights. She’ll be performing an anti-violence cut off her first mix tape, “Sunnie Side Up.” The song is entitled “Fading Away.” Rhymefest curated the performers for this early show.

“It definitely means a lot to me, to perform on this huge platform,” says Sunnie. “The people who won the open mic [nights]? They are talented people. I’m performing Fading Away because it’s talking about the Chicago violence and we don’t have to resort to any sort type of violence. There’s always gonna be better days, and there’s always tomorrow.” - Chicago Suntimes

Bio

Theres sun after every storm. Reigning from the Windy City, Sunnie Storm is the epitome of Hip-Hop. With influences like Tupac, Nas, Lauryn Hill, Pharcyde, TLC and Missy Elliot, you cannot help but hear her old soul being poured out in every song. Sunnies old soul can be heard in her debut EP entitled W.O.W. (Words of Wisdom), which received positive reviews from popular blog sites like Goill.net, whackstars.com and elevatormag.com. Sunnie soon caught the attention of Redeye, a Chicago based newspaper sponsored by the Chicago Tribune, and was selected out of hundreds of entries as one of the top ten finalists in their annual Rock n Vote competition. Though she did not win, the exposure she garnished allowed her to take her career to a completely new level. With the success of her first EP and her appearance in Red Eye Sunnie embarked on a new project, a project she deemed Gunn it to 88. Gunn it to 88 inspired by the theme and plot of the Michael J. Fox starred movie Back to the Future, explores a wide range of topics from poverty to infidelity. Sunnie's talent soon caught the eye of Grammy Award Winner rapper/mentor, Rhymefest, as she became a participant in Kanye West's sponsored (Donda's House) program "Got Bars." In the program she garnished many accolades, Rhymefest saying that she reminded him of Hip-hop legend Bahamadia with her smooth delivery and conscious lyrics. Sunnie continues to flex her lyrical muscles in her new music releasing her debut mixtape "Sunnie Side Up" early 2014 and she shows no signs of stopping as she is set to release her sophomore effort "Heliocentric" summer of 2015. Sunnie has shared the stage with hip-hop legends like Common, Rhymefest, MC Lyte and many more. Sunnie Storm is ahead of her time trying to find her place in the now. It's not about money or fame with Sunnie its about much more than that; it is about creating a needed change and she hopes she can do that through her music."If one person hears my music and feels something my job is done. Im satisfied with that.," says Ms. Storm. There's a storm coming and its Sunnie.
