Bio

The band started up on Sugartree Farm, in the Catoctin Mountains, as a kitchen band when Mr. Slim was just a kid himself, playing along with his family on washboard, jug, spoons, washtub bass and a "Roy Rogers"guitar.
As a teenager, Slim played with Jolly Joe's Jugband as well as Ola Belle Reed, Blind Rev. Pearly Brown, Pete Seeger and John Jackson. Slim eventually started the Barnstormers String Band, playing for barn dances & festivals in the Mid-Atlantic region, nationally, & eventually overseas.
In 1980, Slim was asked by MD State Arts Council and Wolf Trap Institute to create a participatory educational program for schools and the "Sunnyland Band" was created as part of the program.
The Sunnyland Band has over 22,000 members worldwide and has played at schools, festivals, hoedowns & throwdowns across the US and overseas. All kids are welcome to join the band and members receive a free "Sunnyland Band Official Membership Card" just for joining in the fun!
Matching funds are available through the MD & PA Arts Councils, & MD/DC Touring Artists Roster.
