Virginia duo Sunny & Gabe caught our attention with the recent release of “Forget Love”, a hip-hop-tinged, beyond-dusty track featuring Odd Future rap-recliner Mike G. After that, we were looking forward to the two’s first project, Free Candy, which arrives today with 10 songs in total. It’s a refreshing offering and comes with more than enough music to attempt to get a grasp on what Sunny & Gabe are bringing to the table.
I’m tempted to use a sub-genre to describe what they’re doing on Free Candy, but so much of it is varied in presentation that it’s difficult to narrow down. Hip-hop plays a role, that’s for sure, but it’s hard to distinguish what’s a sample (aside from the vocal samples) and what’s being played live. Also, a track like “Fly” sounds like dream-pop at first but evolves into something new entirely with screwed and lo-fi touches.
In other words, you might have some trouble breaking own the project to your friends, but just play them one of the tracks and let the music do the talking. It’s better that way anyway.

Under Sunny & Gabe‘s “Clouds” is a familiar piece of Q-Tip’s “Breathe and Stop,” but layered on top is a kaleidoscope of blissful production from Gabe and melodic vocals from Sunny that take the track as high as you’d expect out of a song of this name. With “Fly,” we heard a hint of jj in the stylings of the producer/singer duo from Virginia, but there’s nothing out that sounds exactly like this unique pairing. Shortly after meeting in Norfolk, Va during the summer of 2012, Sunny and Gabe began their musical journey based on complete creative freedom. As no limits were set, all music has been created outside of the confines of genres and expectations. A true collaborative team, Gabe produces/writes and Sunny sings/writes. Sunny and Gabe wish to reach the world with their own brand of freedom.
