"Sun Red Rising"

"We thought we had seen the last of the crew from (die) Pilot, and that made us sad. Because those guys can crank out some atmosphere. Well, they're back as Sun Red, and the time off appears to have been healthy."

"Over the Weekend: Sun Red"

"Sun Red is (die) Pilot plus some time off and a value shift. This version has more fun, I am told, and it shows. They allow plenty of time for tambourine and guitar solos. That said, the satisfying song craft remains. And the lyrics. "You can't be trusted/to pull apart the alchemy of man." That's good stuff, folks.

There is no substitute for experience, especially live, and the time these guys have put in makes for a particularly confident show. Again, the Meadowlark is not a perfect venue for a band of this intricacy or magnitude. But they made do."

"Sun Red's moody imagery invites listeners to their moody sound"

The browns, beiges and orange-reds of this week's top flier put us more in mind of autumn than late spring. But looking out the window at the gray sky and scrim of snow sticking to things puts us more in mind of autumn too, so it's strangely fitting. Perhaps Sun Red, the new band of former (die) Pilot members, knew the weather would turn just before its show this week?

More likely, they chose it because the moody colors and atmosphere fit the band's musical color quite well. And as we've pointed out many a time before in our flier of the week nods, matching the visuals to the sound is a winning situation. - Westword

Bio

Formed in 2009 from the ashes of Denver based folk-pop band (die) Pilot, Sun Red is an alternative rock band creating an eclectic mix of prodigiously atmospheric ambiance and deliberately engaging hooks.

The result of these five Denver veterans falls in the vein of classic pioneers Television and Pink Floyd to modern innovators like Broken Social Scene and The Mars Volta. The dynamically ranged and sometimes eerily effected vocals draw on unique and almost shadowy themes that include alchemy, astrology, genetics, robotics, and even the mysterious circumstances of the 19th century explorer Meriwether Lewis' death. Using sweeping, rhythmic shifts and musical dissonance, Sun Red walks the line between creative exploration and pop accessibility.

Sun Red seeks to tell the human story in all its resilient sincerity without abandoning tumultuous chapters that are all too often tucked away in comfortable pockets and left unspoken.
