"Suo Suuri härkä"

Suuri Härkä LIRA GILLAR
TEXICALLI RECORDS
FOLKMUSIK.
"Smelled like the marshland herb"

---"The ensemble's playing and singing was a powerful dedication to folk traditions at the same time as there was an invocation of fresh new insight. Suo's sound was deep and it smelled like the marshland herb, tasted like a cloudberry."--- - Pitäjänuutiset 6.10.2009, Kimmo Hämäläinen

"Suo - Maan unia, puun unia"

These lines are not put at the center of a hard baked, if you want is a late review, but we consider it necessary to present the most recent production of a Finnish trio that deserves to be appreciated by the Italian public and known by the industry . Anyone who thinks that the Finnish revival is due only to the beautiful Värttinä you should think again, the scene stands out for neo-traditional Finnish artists of high caliber, as we got to tell the readers of blogfoolk reviewing records or talking about the festival of Karelian Sommelo (A By the way, the dates 2013 review of the border are between 3 to 7 July, www.runolaulu.fi / Sommelo). Formed in 2004, the His, which in Finnish means marsh, come from that which is the breeding ground for artists Folk Music Department of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. The trio is composed of Veera Voima (singing, kantele to 15 strings, harmonic flute, whistle), Emilia Lajunen (5-string violin, nyckelharpa, erhu, backing vocals), Roope Aarnio (guitar, fretless guitar, mandolin, backing vocals) . On their third album, Unia Maan, Puun Unia / Dreams of Earth and Tree (fourth is scheduled for this summer), also collaborate Puljuka Sara (bass and percussion) and Teemu Korpipää (drum programming). A work marked by the reworking of the song of runes, ancient practice of songs that use the so-called Kalevala meter, which has a trochaic tetrameter, however, many variations, it is songs full of the typical elements of oral storytelling (alliteration, assonance, formulas, parallels) . The texts of Maan Unia, Puun Unia are anchored to tradition, evoke the world popular Finnish, but the band is adept at producing creative arrangements, happily weaving tools, and highlighting also remarkable instrumental mastery, especially in Emilia Lajunen violinist. The album captures from the first song "Laulajan Latu": hand pressing, arches in agony, powerful rhythmic drive. The association carburetor great with the next "Manan Unia" and then relax, soft and lyrical sequences in "Unen Nouto", before resuming pace with the interesting instrumental "Artjamei", composed by Emilia. The voice of Veera touches high peaks in the poignant "Tuuditan Tuhoista Lasta", built on a traditional melody Estonia, and in the powerful song "Tuulee." You dance with "Tammikkinen", you are moving between blues with accents "Tummene Tulonen." The next three songs still offer paving satisfactory combination of vocal warm and full-bodied lightly. - Blogfoolk 2013

"SUO Dreams of Earth And Tree Texicalli TEXCD 114 (2011)"

Written in fRoots issue 347, 2012 SUO Dreams of Earth And Tree Texicalli TEXCD 114 (2011)

Notable figures in Finland’s new folk, Veera Voima (vocals, kantele, whistles), Emilia Lajunen (fiddle, nyckelharpa, erhu, vocals) and Roope Aarnio (guitars, mandolin), plus double bass and on some tracks an empowering heft of percussion, in skilfully innovative, rhythmically ingenious and varied new compositions using largely Finnish runolaulu lyrics. Attractive video track too. www.texicalli.net © 2012 Andrew Cronshaw - fRoots issue 347, 2012

"Introduction in Arctic Paradise"

"Suo are trio whose repertoire consists of songs: traditional lyrics about death, hunting, playing, and also love. The singing is freely flowing, with one to three voices contributing, transporting the listener to distant times and places. The soundscape on their third album Maan unia, puun unia (Texicalli 2011) is carefully considered and beautifully finished.

With voice, violin and guitar, Suo conjure forth lovely melodies, intriguing rhythms and a wide range of moods from nature magic to children's games. Vocalist Veera Voima (Suden aika) has a lovely voice capable of highly nuanced interpretations; Roope Aarnio (Johanna Juhola trio) plays guitar and mandolin; and Emilia Lajunen (Spontaani Vire) is a capable violinist who is equally adept at improvised solos and disciplined accompaniment."

"Kalevalainen perinne pantiin svengaamaan"

"Suo Maan Unia, Puun Unia Texicalli Records (51 mins) ****"

There's more to Finn-folk than just Varttina... Finnish runo singing, kalevala verses, ancient myths, magic spells — these are the foundations on which the now legendary Varttina built their music and their worldwide success. Varttina still rule, but following in their wake is a new generation of Finnish folk musicians who are finding their own voice and their own take on the old traditions. Folk music education is enviably strong (look no further than the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki) and young musicians have plenty of support and encouragement to help them on their way. Suo is one such band, a trio which has been together since 2004, all graduates of the Sibelius Academy where two of them now teach. They deserve to have a much wider reputation outside Finland. Their playing is first rate, their arrangements thoughtful, creative and fun, yet we're never far away from Finnish traditional roots. Flutes, whistles, kanteles, fiddles, Chinese erhu, nyckelharpa, guitars, mandolin, vocals, percussion and bass are the instruments that supply the broad and fascinating sonic palette, making the most of the twisting harmonies and rhythms. There is plenty of fun in this album, as in the invitation to dance that's hard to refuse in 'Tammikkinen' (The Oak Girl). But there is space for reflection too — particularly on 'Tuuditan Tuhoista Lasta; contemplating the death of a child. TRACK TO TRY: Laulajan Latu

Bio

(The Marshland)

The music of Suo digs deep down into the landscape of archaic Finnish runosinging: the rich language of kalevala poetry and its the fascinating myths and spells.

Interpreted by this skillful trio, the forgotten stories become alive once more and gets injected straight into your spine: the energetic guitar of Roope Aarnio, the nimble fiddle of Emilia Lajunen and powerful voice of Veera Voima will take you on an unforgettable journey.

The other elements adding to the unique sound of Suo are medieval string instrument nyckelharpa, 10-string kantele, shaman drum, low whistle and overtone flute, and rich 3-voice harmonies.

Suo released a fourth CD The Great Ox on 2013, and has released three previous records: The Last Trip 2006, The Sea Drives my Mind 2009 and Dreams of Earth and Tree 2011. The trio also arranged and recorded a CD of childrens music Maja-majava in 2008. In year 2012 both norwegian Grotto and FIMIC (Finnish Music Information Center) used one of the bands songs in their compilation CD. The Albums can be purchised in Digelius and in junodownload.

Suo's music was heard in a documentary of Finnish nature, that was ordered by Ministry of Environment for the Finland's 90th year festivities and in 2007 was shown in a live concert that was also attended by Mrs. President Tarja Halonen.

Suo won the third prize in Kaustinen Konsta Jylha -competition year 2012, and first prize in Raakkyla the year 2007. Suo's second CD was one of the five nominees for Finnish equivalent of music oscar, Etno-Emma prize of 2009.
