Supa Soul Sound System

Supa Soul Sound System

Created to fill a gap in Austin's legendary party scene, the Supa Soul Sound System has carved a loyal following. DJ CRich's blend of soul, funk, R&B, disco, Chicago house and hip hop consistently brings out a crowd and has even been named "Best of Austin 2009" by the Austin Chronicle.

When DJ CRich arrived in Austin in 2008, he noticed something missing. In a city filled with DJ's and parties, there was a lack of a soul scene. Already an experienced DJ with a following in Chicago, he set out to do something about it. Trying to truly carve his own space in the crowded music landscape in Austin, CRich chose to bring a new kind of event to town. Thus, Supa Soul Sunday became Austin's first after-brunch Sunday happy hour. Any new format is a risk, but with CRich's signature mixes of R&B, Soul, Breaks, Disco, Chicago House and Hip Hop, a crowd began to form.

Meanwhile, long-time Austin resident, Chop Steak was a veteran of the local urban music scene. Having been a producer, radio host, DJ, writer and promoter, he knew the city and the fans. He met CRich and attended some of the early Sunday parties. Soon, he was on board making exclusive remixes for Supa Soul, promoting the events and even stepping in behind the turntables from time to time. The alliance of the two helped Supa Soul Sound System flourish.

With improved promotion and word of mouth, Supa Soul Sunday grew to a consistently successful event with a loyal following. In its first year, Supa Soul Sunday was named in the Austin Chronicle's annual "Best of Austin" issue. This is an honor that the still-growing Sound System shares with many Austin institutions. With a great DJ, original music, and the promotional connections to pack the house, the Supa Soul Sound System is poised to grow in 2010.
