We were told that this time BimFest was held in the new venue, De Casino. We arrived in time for the first act, Super Dragon Punch!!. I went straight to the stage to take some pics. Although there was no photo pit, it was not yet too crowded and the atmosphere was relaxed, just warming up for the time being. The band gave an excellent show. We didn’t know what exactly to expect from this fairly new band, but their performance was brilliant and the frontman really knew how to animate the crowd. Not knowing the songs can be a drawback, but sometimes it is nice to hear something new that would prompt you to check on the band later. This industrial-ebm-synth pop act certainly managed to catch our interest, so we will pay attention to them in future. They certainly gave us some positive energy. - AltVenger

SUPER DRAGON PUNCH!! aus Belgien ist Jérémie und Jérémie ist überschäumende Lebendigkeit. Stilstaan bij hun uitstekende electro/Industrial hoort er niet bij! Jérémie Veganza is bovendien een uitstekende volksmenner die haast geen seconde stilstaat en keihard werkt opdat iedereen uit de bol gaat! Er is ook een uitstekende bassist die zorgt voor een harder geluid. Daarnaast is er nog een aanstelijke dame die voor de beats, beeps en bleeps en zowat alles wat ze uit een synth kan halen slaat. Niet alleen dit trio heeft genoten (en toont héél wat dankbaarheid): ook het publiek en de mensen die hen voor het eerst aan het werk hebben gezien hebben genoten! They were more than ready to throw a party, and they did. The vibe between the three of them is awesome, it’s obvious they’re good friends and that also shows as they have a great interaction with each other on stage.

Along with the songs from the EP, they threw in a bunch of other songs, which were to the liking of the audience (and myself) as well, making this a long and very enjoyable set. - Peek A Boo

Stevige beats van de drumcomputer tekenden af tegen het sterke toetsenwerk door Noemie, die haar fles Kraken gul deelde met het publiek. Op de achtergrond kregen we knap gepixelde visuals, maar in geen enkele retrogame zagen we noch Super Mario, noch Commander Keen met zo’n wijd gesperde benen over kratten springen als zanger Jérémie Venganza dat in de lucht deed, terwijl bassist Sem als een krijger rauwe bastonen toevoegde. - Luminous Dash

Super Dragon Punch!!, then, is off to a great start in their career with “Feral”. Their crunchy industrial dance beats shine brightest when mixed with their 8bit influences. Super Dragon Punch? What's that - a martial arts move? An alcoholic party drink with a kick? Nope. It's Belgian artist Jérémie Venganza with the debut release of his synthpunk/8bit/industrial project, an EP titled 'Shatter,' and it does pack a bit of a wallop. Venganza won last year’s Dark Demons Night, scoring an opening slot for Belgium’s illustrious BIMfest festival, so he's not coming without cred to the scene. Vocally, he reminds me a little of Dirk Ivens (Klinik, Dive, Absolute Body Control) but musically this is highly polished dark dancefloor EBM. His vocal style is more on the punky side than aggrotech or hellectro, which is great because I'm really getting jaded on raspy/distoro/screamy vocals that everybody and their sister has been doing for a spell. Synthwork is very competent but nothing you haven't heard before. The combo of Venganza's enthusiastic rough and ready vocals juxtaposed with slick electronics punctuated with club-heavy beats, good hooks and just the right amount of repetition to drive the point home is surely a "winner takes all" formula. There are four songs and four remixes of two of them for a total of eight tracks. From the outset with "Core," SDP exhibit an urgency with mad fervor that can't be denied. It's a controlled sort of frenzy that is bound to drive goth stompers and riverheads wild. "Pure" sacrifices some momentum in favor of expanding SDP's sonic palette and settling into a groove. Okay, but certainly not the best thing on this EP. "Howl" gets even more atmospheric and I hear an even stronger Ivens influence here with a touch of Suicide Commando. Good stuff, but it even gets better on "Inspire." I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics until this song. Here everything comes together in an ultra-dynamic way with engaging verse and a compelling enigmatic chorus- "I forget how it is to resurrect the needles in my chest...emptiness, staring back to me, turn it off me in my chair" whoa, that's something you don't hear every day. This is a killer track, and not one of the remixes can sabotage it. Speaking of remixes, Assemblage 23 is first up remixing the aforementioned tune. Tom Shear does a credible job, and although not radically different than the original, it does put the vocals more upfront without sacrificing the feel of the original. Terrolokaust remixes "Pure" turning it into more of a heavier industrial stomper with a lot stripped out adding in some squinky effects but makes it sound epic 2/3 of the way through. An interesting job on this one. The Iszoloscope remix of "Inspire" is a distorto noise beat assault that struck me more as novelty than anything essential. Last up is WOTTW's technoy remix of "Inspire." For me, this was the most interesting remix on the EP, which is saying something because you know I'm not a big remix fan.

Super Dragon Punch really has the potential of muscling its way to the top if 'Shatter' is an indication of what Jérémie is capable of. I think he has a handle on what needs to go into making compelling EBM (live though, a little more melodicism and a little less shouting in the vocal dept., as evidenced by the live YouTube vids) and if SDP can keep on cranking out great tracks like this, it will be unstoppable. - Chain D.L.K.

We zijn er nog niet uit in welk vakje we Super Dragon Punch!! moeten onderbrengen. Nu ja, welke band wil er opgesloten worden in één bepaald genre? Nergens voor nodig, en het werkt alleen maar verstikkend! Feit is wel dat dat deze Belgische band waarvan Jérémie Venganza de spilfiguur is en vorig jaar de Dark Demons Night won (wat hun een openingsplaats op het jaarlijkse BIMFest opleverde) het uitstekend zal doen bij elektrofanaten

De band ontstond uit de assen van RANkOR en bestaat ondertussen al zo’n vijf jaar en deelde in Mexico en Japan podia met grootheden als Suicide Commando, Underviewer en Dive.

Een band met een EBM-tintje dat wel, maar toch voel je dat Super Dragon Punch!! een breder publiek kan aanspreken, iets wat ze ongetwijfeld zullen doen als ze de kans krijgen om gehoord te worden.

Met Shatter heeft deze band zijn eerste wapenfeit uit, een ep op het Duitse Echozone met daarop vier originele tracks en vier remixen.

In Core hoor je meteen de beukende beats die voortvloeien uit een liefde van oude computerspelletjes. Een daadkrachtige song die uiterst geschikt is voor de alternatieve dansvloer. Synthpoppunk met veel melodie, zo’n song die na een draaibeurt of twee een echte oorwurm wordt.

Pure is nog iets melodischer, maar hier hoor je meer de invloeden van Rotersand en zelfs Icon Of Coil doorschemeren. EBM met een harsh kantje so to speak!

Howl toont dan weer eerder het duistere kantje van Jérémie Venganza. Ingetogen vocals die begeleid worden door een zenuwachtige beat, het lijkt wel een dolgedraaide alarmsirene die loeit nadat het onheil al lang is geschied. Een zeer goede song, en één die voorbestemd is om een klassieker in het genre te worden.

Inspire is ongetwijfeld de meest hitgevoelige track van de vier. Een soort van opgewekte versie van Suicide Commando, en inderdaad een heel kleine beetje futurepop-achtig. Niet dat zoiets slecht is, integendeel!

En dan is het tijd voor de mixen. Hoewel de band niet zo bekend is kon Jérémie Venganza op de steun rekenen van grote namen uit het genre. Assemblage 23 bijvoorbeeld die Inspire nog iets meer adrenaline geeft. Terrolokaust doet zijn ding met Pure en de Spaanse band maakt er (tja) iets typisch Terrolokaust-achtig van.

Eerlijk gezegd hebben we het al vaker gehad met de vele remixes van één en hetzelfde nummer, toch toont de Iszoloscope-behandeling van Inspire een andere kant van de song. Meer harsh en vervormde vocals in hun geval. Wie er niet genoeg van krijgt, komt nog een derde keer aan zijn trekken, want ook WOTTW heeft de song nog een behandeling bezorgd.

Conclusie van dit alles? Met Super Dragon Punch!! heeft ons landje er meteen een elektro-EBM-act bij om in het oog te houden. - Luminous Dash

Coming close to the end of a series of ebm/industrial/synth-pop releases, we bring you to the new EP from Belgium’s Super Dragon Punch!!, Shatter EP.

Super Dragon Punch!! is the project of Jeremie Venganza and has been in existence since 2012 after a series of involvement with various projects for 15 years. I’m thinking the name is a reference to the video game, Street Fighter.

Aside from that, there is a clear influence from retro-gaming in the samples and not to mention Jeremie’s Street Fighter and Crystal Castles t-shirts which he can be seen wearing in some pictures.

In any case, Shatter EP contains 5 original tracks and 4 remixes. Stylistically, there is a clear influence from 80s/90s synth-pop with a bit of a modern ebm twist. However, occasionally Super Dragon Punch!! does something very rarely seen in this music which gives the music some definite uniqueness; abrupt key changes. (i.e. 1:30 on “Inspire.”) But you know what? It doesn’t happen that often but when it does, it actually works probably to the advantage of helping this artist establish its own identity in a flood of copy-cats. The four remixes include those by Assemblage 23, Terrolokaust, WOTTW and Iszoloscope.

It’s been a great week that has given us hope for the future of this music; that there are still artists out there regardless of geography that are willing and able to do something that balances out the familiar and the unique. Count Super Dragon Punch!! among them.

At the end of the day, I’m looking forward to seeing what Super Dragon Punch!! does next. If you are into 80s/90s synth-pop but more on the modern ebm side, you’ll no doubt like this guy’s work.

The Belgian newcomer Super Dragon Punch!! released their first EP Shatter in October this year. They performed at BIMfest festival 2017 in Belgium after winning at Dark Demons Night. The band delivers the unique sound which can be described as a mix of of synth pop, future pop, EBM and electronic music influences.

a3767375887_10Shatter consists of 4 tracks which deliver raw energy, heavy beats, catchy synth melodies and powerful vocals. The opening track “Core” is the perfect dance floor material; rhythmic, dancy and melodic. However, they slow the pace with “Pure” which relies more on the beat than the melody. They create an intriguing atmospheric soundscape which will certainly catch your attention. The next number “Howl” is even more oriented to creating synth soundscapes. The track delivers the darker atmosphere than the previous tracks and it is my personal favourite. They leave one more dancy and vibrant number for the end. “Inspire” is the most synth pop-future pop oriented track on the EP. You will undoubtedly recognize its catchy chorus the next time you hear it during their live performance.

This EP reveals an interesting approach in electronic underground music. It’s the kind of sound that will not appeal for one specific audience and that might be the strength of Super Dragon Punch!! - Side-Line

Super Dragon Punch!! is a Belgian based EBM/Industral band from Louvaine-La-Neuve, mostly the project of Jérémie Venganza (featuring some live musicians as well). The EP appeared on the Echozone label this Autumn and consists of four original songs as well as four remixes. Some of you will surely remember SDP!! performing at the last BIM Festival and from now on you can also enjoy their songs at home as well.

Style

The single from SPD!! has very anarchical and has a tribal note (similar to Hocico) but also features some more melodic electro with a gothic hint (similar to Kite) and very defined minimalistic beats.

Favorite songs

"Core" is the most vibrant and dramatic track of the album. Plus one for dramaturgy and a very good album opening. My personal favourite is "Howl" - for the melodical "nineinchnailish" chorus and oldschool beats. A hit! From remixes I would like to outline Inspire (Iszoloscope Remix). Pure noice with nice synths, that gives the song a new aspect.

When to listen

At the occasions at which you usually listen to dark and agressive electro ;) When you realise, that life is not only about glitter and unicorns.

Fra i molti esordi tenuti a battesimo dalla sempre attivissima Echozone c'è quello di SDP!!, progetto belga condotto in solitaria da Jérémie Venganza che debutta con l'EP in esame, confezionato in un gradevole digipack completo di booklet. Lo stesso Jérémie descrive il proprio sound come 'synthpunk/8bit/industrial', anche se in realtà di punk vi è giusto qualche sfumatura vocale (ma pare che dal vivo la faccenda si faccia più energica) e l'aspetto musicale, non certo così retrò, appare più in linea con un'EBM energica che può ricordare certe cose dei Kloq. Un mix ben bilanciato e prodotto - anche grazie al mastering dell'esperto Krischan Wesenberg dei Rotersand - che mostra di funzionare, dall'agile opener "Core" alla più muscolare "Pure" (che parte 'grassa' per poi caricarsi di elementi melodici e dance), passando per la sinuosa e carismatica "Howl" (picco qualitativo del dischetto) ed una "Inspire" solida e 'punchy'. Met de debuut-ep van Super Dragon Punch!! die deze week op Echozone uitkwam waren we behoorlijk tevreden. Synthpunk gedreven op gamebeats met een vleugje EBM er bovenop. Wij spraken met de man achter het project Jérémie Venganza.

Hoe zou je zelf de muziek van Super Dragon Punch!! omschrijven?
Super Dragon Punch!! is voor mij een krachtige stoot tegen vooropgestelde regels en alles dat me wil tegenhouden om te zijn hoe ik wil zijn, of geraken waar ik wil. Het is ook een grote smeltketel van al de invloeden en ervaringen die ik tijdens mijn leven heb verzameld die samen de puzzel volledig maken.

Zijn die twee uitroeptekens nodig?
Die twee uitroeptekens geven extra kracht aan de vuistslagen, en zijn eigenlijk een verwijzing naar de Punch-Out!!-videogames. Zoals Super Dragon Punch een verwijzing naar Street Fighter 2 is.

Ben ik juist als ik zeg dat Super Dragon Punch!! zo wat het alter ego is van Jérémie Venganza?
De meeste personen die me niet kennen van op fuiven of festivals zien me als een heel rustige en iets verlegen persoon. Super Dragon Punch!! is een beetje mijn therapie waar al mijn verborgen emoties worden vrijgelaten, en waar ik het andere extreme deel van mijn persoonlijkheid toon.

De muziek verraadt natuurlijk je voorliefde voor de elektronica. Een EBM-verslaafde of luister jij in feite naar alles?
Ik luister inderdaad heel graag naar elektronische muziek, maar niet enkel naar EBM. Momenteel luister ik vooral naar futurepop, synthpop en sommige soorten metal of hardcore punk, of zelfs een beetje pop. Ik luister het liefst altijd naar muziek met zang die een beetje melancholisch is.

Vorig jaar won Super Dragon Punch!! de Dark Demons Night. Heeft dat deuren geopend?
Het was alvast een fantastische gelegenheid om ineens naast heel grote namen op BIMFEST te mogen optreden. Daarnaast heb ik kunnen merken dat er veel meer personen die ik nog niet kende al over mijn project hadden horen spreken, en het staat natuurlijk heel mooi op mijn cv.

Er is nu een ep uit. Onnodig te vragen of je hier trots op bent?
Ik ben zeker heel blij dat ik met al die grote artiesten heb kunnen werken waar ik veel respect en bewondering voor heb, en het resultaat was nog veel beter dan wat ik had kunnen verwachten. Toch lijd ik helaas een beetje aan perfectionisme, en ik kan me moeilijk op de positieve aspecten blijven concentreren. Mijn aandacht gaat helaas vaak naar punten die ik nog zou willen verbeteren, maar dit kan natuurlijk ook heel constructief zijn.

De band is niet zo bekend, maar wel meteen kunnen samenwerken met Assemblage 23, Iszoloscope en Terrolokaust. Hoe deed je dat?
Ik zou zeggen dat ik geluk heb dat ik meer dan 15 jaar geleden goed bevriend ben geworden met een beroemde dark electro-groep, waardoor ik heel veel interessante personen heb leren kennen en wat later met sommige Mexicaanse en Amerikaanse groepen mijn eerste concertervaringen heb kunnen meemaken als live-percussionist of -keyboardspeler op kleine en grotere events. Op die manier heb ik heel snel nog meer muzikanten leren kennen waarvan ik fan ben.

De band ontstond uit RANkOR. Wat is het verschil met RANkOR en Super Dragon Punch!!?
RANkOR was veel noisier, experimenteel en vol haat. Kort voor ik met Super Dragon Punch !! begon, heb ik gemerkt dat al die haat en dat soort muziek niet meer echt met mijn personaliteit pasten. Ik heb dan besloten om een nieuw project te maken met elementen die ik wel nog steeds leuk vond uit mijn jeugd, en die ik waarschijnlijk altijd leuk zou blijven vinden, zoals retrogaming-geluiden. In het begin heb ik geprobeerd om oudere nummers van RANkOR aan te passen naar Super Dragon Punch!!, maar na talloze uren werk merkte ik steeds dat er niets overbleef van de originele nummers, behalve misschien een paar samples.

Je stond al op podia in Mexico en Japan, dat moeten toch unieke belevenissen zijn?
Kunnen optreden voor Mexicanen die zoveel passie hebben voor dit soort muziek, of voor Japanners die soms nog nooit naar dit soort muziek hadden geluisterd, maar toch een heel leuk en receptief publiek waren, blijven zeker heel mooie herinneringen. Ik zal altijd speciale banden hebben met die twee landen, maar hoop dat ik ook mijn muziek op nog vele andere nieuwe plaatsen kan delen, en ook op andere verschillende soorten events. Ik vind het altijd superleuk om mensen uit de hele wereld te leren kennen.

Nu de ep er is, staan er nieuwe optredens op stapel?
Eind vorige maand waren er opnieuw een paar optredens in Japan, en op 3 maart zullen we samen met Deleritas, Nihiliste, Larva en Ethan Fawkes (dj set) in Luik optreden. Naast dit zal er nog een tweede optreden met Larva in Frankrijk aangekondigd worden voor februari. We zouden natuurlijk dolgraag vaker optreden, dus indien promotors interesse hebben zouden we het heel graag horen (lacht)

De ep is dat nu een aanloop naar een volledig album of niet?
Er zal inderdaad hopelijk kort na volgende zomer een volledig album verschijnen waarvan de meeste nummers al bijna klaar zijn.

Seks, drugs of rock ’n roll?
Rock ‘n roll met misschien een beetje rum of whisky (lacht)

Wat is je favoriete plaat aller tijden en waarom?
Dit is een moeilijke vraag omdat mijn smaak in muziek toch een beetje veranderd is tijdens de jaren, maar ik denk dat Judgement van Anathema altijd een cd zal zijn die voor mij nauw aan het hart zal liggen. Anathema slaagt er altijd in mij zo snel zo sterke emoties te laten voelen en herinneringen terug te roepen.

Met wie zou je het niet erg vinden om acht uur mee in een lift te zitten en wat zou je dan doen?
Ik denk dat ik het liefst 8 uur met mezelf als kind of tiener zou willen besteden. Ik zou veel tegen mijn eigen zeggen, over het verleden, over de toekomst, en misschien een paar knopen doorhakken.
