If you ever wondered what The Doors would sound like if they were a modern rock band, look no further than New Bostons own SuperLast. Fronted by Mike Azuri, who is an interesting hybrid of Pearl Jams Eddie Vedder, and The Doors Jim Morrison, Azuri has one of the best ranges, and best voices that I have seen in my 10+ years in the Detroit music scene.
Since the group started in early 2008, the band has played sparingly until this year where they have played several big events in the metro Detroit area. Still a very ‘underground’ Detroit band, this is a band to watch, as they will definitely be a player in the upper echelon of the Detroit rock scene. Not metal, not pop, just good old fashioned alternative rock. This is one of the few rare bands that can blend a good stage show in with songs that are very heart felt, and meaningful, a long lost craft in rock n’ roll.
I saw them perform at Rack N’ Roll in Riverview a week or so ago in a lineup that did not do this band any favors. The band before them was a party rock band, and the band after them were a hardcore screamo band. But SuperLast won every last one of the audience members over with their tight sound, and stellar stage show that left all the performers on stage rocking in pools of their own sweat.
Their first recording ‘American Lunatic’ was released in 2009 features songs such as ‘Everafter,’ ‘Blame It All On Me’ and a song that was written about the late John Lennon, entitled simply ‘Lennon.’ This is a band that draws their influences from modern rock, classic rock, and classic Beatles-esque pop, and makes it sound entirely their own.
The band also features the extraordinary guitar work of Johnny Q, and Tim Reamer, who also plays keyboards, with Ray Manzarek style. Locking down the rhythm end are Tim Downs on bass guitar and Rich Pyle on drums and percussion. If you see this band on any bills, you will know at least one band that night will have your attention from beginning to end.

In a classic example of life mimicking art. Five experienced Detroit musicians came together to record a studio project. During this process they began to put so much heart and soul into the tracks they were cutting, that the record became very personal to each one of them.
The project became a CD release “American Lunatic” (Audiostone Records 2009) and the musicians became a band,SuperLast.
With special guest performances by Pete Keys (Lynyrd Skynyrd) & Mike Smith (HowlingDiablos,Face,KEG), American Lunatic is overflowing with instant classics. Strong, hook-laden melodies and inventive music with a deep, dark edge are the band’s calling card.
Frontman and vocalist Mike Azuri explains, “What we have tried to achieve is a natural bridge between Modern and Classic rock.” Legendary music promoter Tom Gelardi had this to say after listening to his advance copy of American Lunatic, “Great songs and a wonderful performance by the singer and the band. This group definitely needs to be seen in a live performance !”
