"In Your Speakers: SURFING The Fuzzed Out Waves"

Surfing is the shoegazey, fuzzed-out Harrisonburg, VA quartet of Jordan Stern, Chris Burden, Brodie Adams, Fernando Perez that’s kicking the genre up a notch.

“Hollow Sparrow” is the first single from this up coming band’s debut EP (as yet to be named) due out this summer on vinyl. This cut was one of five tracks recorded at The Sound Studios in Charlottesville, VA back in February. The track is pretty great. It’s a combination of Dum Dum Girls, and Phantogram that’s hard to ignore, but not hard on the ears.

While the band is currently hangin’ in Harrisonburg, VA, they’ll soon be moving to the Mecca of all things musical, Brooklyn. Surfing is off to a great start! Last year, they played over 100 east coast dates, had showcases at SXSW, and CMJ in Brooklyn.

Check these guys out! They’ll be touring throughout the NYC and VA areas.

"Yankie: Surfing: MEET Shoegaze’s new darlings Surfing are here to steal your heart. Hailing from Virginia, this is a band that aren’t just another flash in the surfer-rock pan."

Beach House, Best Coast, Surfer Blood, Beach Fossils… you’d be forgiven for getting a bit fed up with these sea-based bands. But you know what? You should pay attention to Surfing – for one, they’re more shoegaze than token surfer-pop; secondly, they went down really well at SXSW and thirdly, they sound pretty damn wonderful.

‘Hollow Sparrow’ is full of angst, feverish drums and yearning vocals. Hazy guitars dart across the composition, proving that keeping it simple often produces the best of tunes. Add Surfing to your summer playlist – you won’t regret a second of it.

"No Fear of Pop: SURFING “Hollow Sparrow”"

Harrisonburg, Virginia-based Surfing have recorded five new tracks, produced by Lopato of Lil Kids, and are preparing to release an EP featuring on vinyl this summer. The first single, "Hollow Sparrow," is a stark switch to shoegaze from the band's previous punk tracks. Lead singer Jordan Stern's vocals, which manage to be open and breathy, but maintain a soulful timbre, are complemented by aggressive guitar and percussion. Surfing fully owns their new sound and I anticipate the EP will inject the East coast shoegaze scene with a new energy. - No Fear Of Pop

"The Deli: VA's SURFING Release New Single "Hollow Sparrow""

"Hollow Sparrow" is a treat for fans of shoegaze, indie, pop, or whatever else suits your fancy. Combined with Jordan Stern’s complex lyrics and haunting vocals, this song is a perfect addition to any playlist for ushering in the summer. -Karl Dobias - The Deli

"It rained and poured and drizzled all day Saturday, but there was still a great turnout for the Surfing, Glass Pennies, Great Dismal Swamis, The Larchmont Trash, and Nightmare Boyzzz warehouse show."

They had five bands, a keg, some potato chips, bottled water, and were even grilling out dogs and burgers – with no cover. People parked on the street and drudged through the downpour to get to this warehouse on 24th Street. There were people from all different corners of the area there, coming together to support some local bands and even some that drove pretty damn far to get here.

Here are some photos and video clips I took with my mobile clever phone. - Alt Daily

"Another August, another set of maximum rock’n'roll weekends."

At 8 (or 9?), it’s time once again to celebrate the birthday of the once-and-again-current booker of Don Pedro, the sultan of nude, Mr. Jake ‘Noodles’ Winn. Scheduled to rock this night at ‘Death Cult HQ North America’ are a collection of ponks including Jake’s own Baddasseries, Dino’s Boys, Fucking Bullshit, 60's cover bunch the Psycho Hippies and Surfing, an out-of-town mob hailed by several folks whose taste I trust. $5 for this, DJs and god knows what else! - Garage Punk NYC

"13TH APR 2012"

SURFING [Harrisonburg, Va] - April 4th, 2012 :: brought the party again. It’s been four months since we last hosted these guys, but time’s on our side. They’re crisp and polished now - and know how to play the songs they’ve written. (Last show was a first for this crew) Anyway, it’s super energetic and playful surf punk. And when I say surf, it actually feels like you’re listening to a Dick Dale song sometimes. Chris Burden (vox, guitar) has developed a goofy, well-executed vocal style (super high-pitched and reverb-heavy) that makes his nihilistic punk lyrics feel sarcastic and thus, simultaneously more thought-provoking and more enjoyable. It’s all a joke, these kids from Harrisonburg making beach jams and rapping about bitches and malls. And I love it. See a show of their’s and get ready to wanna hop around and hit people in a sweaty room. http://surfingtheband.com/ - Pigeon Holed

"SURFING"

Ports of Spain came back from Virginia raving about hill-folk, a stolen picture of the Pope, and this band called Surfing. Obviously we had to check them out.

Surfing is a noisey new band from Harrisonburg VA who have evidently been making a scene up and down the east coast. The Dead Wave-EP is garagey in the best possible way, and at less than a month old it’s a ridiculously strong start. Its blending of surf slacker style and furtive nods to no-wave is pitch perfect and ably produced. It takes a lot of work to make something look so effortless, and that work is evident in their relentless touring schedule.

This May the boys in Surfing have four NY dates starting at The Charleston.
Go to one of them, or all of them, or none of them. we don’t own you.
