"E.D. Ward - Surfin' With The Sharks"

E.D. WARD — “SURFIN’ WITH THE SHARKS”

It must be right living on my part or all the planets have aligned because this month I received not one but two great CDs for review. First was the Glenn Kricher CD and now E.D. Ward sends his latest release “Surfin’ With The Sharks.” Merely for reference, imagine if you will the vocal of Harry Chapin fronting a progressive, “Can’t Buy A Thrill”-era Steely Dan and you’ll have the sound of this CD. Substitute E.D. Ward’s warm, rich tenor for Donald Fagen’s nasally vocal (although E.D. does a nice approximation of just that voice on “Go 4 The Gold”) and meld it with a backing band of extremely talented jazzbo rockers and you’ve got “Surfin’ With The Sharks.” After a rather inauspicious opening, the bluesy oddity “This Ain’t No Partnership,” E.D. Ward and the band get down to business delivering 11 tracks of well-crafted, rock/jazz/pop featuring intelligent lyrics and great story telling. The CD features exceptional packaging, production and terrific performances throughout. The MVP of “Surfin’” is co-producer, engineer and guitarist Kevin Joella. A fantastic guitarist, he can play it fast and furious as on “Go 4 The Gold” or tasty and tuneful as on “Run 4 Cover,” “No Free Ride” and others and never seems to overplay (when you know he easily could) in the tradition of Walter Becker, Elliot Randall, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter et.al. Add in a rhythm section willing to stretch out while never losing the groove and you’ve got a heck of a listening experience. If this CD is any indication, apparently you really CAN “Buy A Thrill.” This is it. Buy it.

Bio

Some people have described us as being like Steely
Dan...If so, then I think we're more Steely than Dan,
at least in my mind. There is thought that goes into
my lyrics and there is purpose with each song but
there is an effort to make each song sound different
from the others. I am different.
A denizen of 5 decades of being a student of Rock
n' Roll. Using guitars as the keystone of my music,
I draw upon my half-century of guitar obsessions
to inspire my song-writing, arranging, and
performing. I am self-produced, self-financed,
self-promoted, and self-driven to place his music
before the public.
It's like nothing you ever heard before.
