Generation of Eyes

Generation of Eyes
Susan Hulbert/Copyright 2011
The rear-view mirror was never my friend
I only saw the eyes of my father
Where there was too much heartache to mend
I lived a life filled with regret
Not knowing if I was unwilling to forgive
Or just unable to forget

A generation of eyes is haunting me
That same blue color and shape
But hidden behind them there was no escape
A ghost of pain I couldn’t restrain
And a life heading into an oncoming train

I blamed him for everything that went wrong
Not manning up to my own actions
Always acting like I didn’t belong
Skidding my heals on my responsibilities
Trying to deal with my own hostilities

A generation of eyes is haunting me
That same blue color and shape
But hidden behind them there was no escape
A ghost of pain I couldn’t restrain
And a life heading into an oncoming train

I chuckle now when I look to the back in the rear-view mirror
Seeing my son with those same blue eyes
Knowing it’s not that I didn’t belong
I just needed him to come along
And realizing with every passing glance
Life is offering me a second chance

A generation of eyes no longer haunts me
That same blue color was the key
That got rid of the ghost
That was messin with me
