“Susanna & The Grinders may give the world a big ‘fuck off,’ we give them a big thumbs up!”
–Daniel Magnusson, Groove (Sweden’s top music magazine)

Susanna & The Grinders is a promising new group form Sweden lead by singer and guitarist Susanna Risberg. On the group’s debut album, Twine, Susanna sings, writes, produces, and plays all the instruments except for the drums, which are played by her brother Björn Risberg.

Susanna & The Grinders formed in the spring of 2008 when Susanna accidentally came up with lyrics to one of her instrumental jazz tunes. But as soon as she started taking the singing seriously, masterful pop and rock songs began pouring from Susanna’s fingertips and soul.

Prior to forming Susanna & The Grinders, Susanna Risberg had an active career as a jazz guitarist. She started performing at the age of twelve and by the time that Risberg was 16 she had played with most of the top jazz musicians in Sweden. At the age of 17, she was accepted to Berklee College of Music on a scholarship to study jazz guitar. Now at the age of 20, Susanna has shifted all of her attention to Susanna & The Grinders. The group has performed in venues all over Sweden, and in 2011 is reaching out to the rest of the world with Twine.

The music of Susanna & The Grinders could be described as catchy but daring indie-pop music with an ‘80s pop feel to it, but in a very contemporary setting. It brings to mind artists like Tegan and Sara, Dinosaur Jr,, and Florence + The Machine combined with Miike Snow and Radiohead.

“Twine,” the title track of the album, is undeniably catchy with strong melodies, rhythmic intensity, and an up-beat tempo that leaves no listener unaffected. “Ted” has some of the strongest melodies of the album—its feel is relaxed with an underlying tension, and the dark lyrics contribute to an overall feeling of suspense. “Future Song” has a really cool groove and intensity—the ostinato of the song has the catchiness of a possible future classic.
