Bio

Susmita De picked up her guitar in university, then trekked the Portuguese countryside and returned a year later with a notebook full of inspiration. Coming into her own as a musician, Susmita has graced local Toronto haunts such as Hart House, Free Times Café, Renaissance Cafe and Holy Joe's. She has recently set her sights across the border, performing at the famous Eddie’s Attic and playing in songwriting competitions at Old Smithe’s Bar in Atlanta, Georgia. Rumors that this is an attempt to single-handedly mend diplomatic ties between Canada and the US have yet to be proven.

However, there is substantial evidence that appears to support these rumors: south of the border, Susmita was noted as one of Atlanta Music Guide’s favourites from the 120-act Open Mic Madness singing/songwriting competition. At home in Toronto, she’s also been spotlighted on a local TV station – where part of her performance at a website launch event was aired.

Susmita's songs capture the person who she rarely admits to being, and about the person she wishes she could admit to being. “Songwriting is a tricky thing; you write to articulate what you’re feeling, but at the same time, you’re instinctively trying to mask it, to cover up the fact that – yes…that’s what really is going on in my head. When you sing about your innermost thoughts and experiences - your naïve vulnerability is exposed. And that’s a scary thing.”

Susmita just moved from Toronto to Chicago to see what life would be like in a new city. The new life experience is bringing her new inspiration for songs, and she looks forward to recording and performing soon in her new city.
