Bio
Swarathma is a contemporary Indian folk-fusion band based in Bangalore. The band released their debut album on EMI/Virgin in January 2009 and received a 4 star rating from Rolling Stone India. Swarathma represents the sound of today's India - rooted in its traditional values and culture yet willing to explore the sounds and styles of Western music. Swarathma's songs talk of joys and sorrows, of hope, pain and loss, optimism and despair, through experiences that are real and tangible. The sound is contemporary Indian folk, with a fusion of rock, carnatic and jazz. Most of all, the stage act is truly an experience.
Swarathma stormed the original music scene by winning Radio City Live 2008, an all-India talent hunt for the best original band in the country. Their fresh sound of acoustic guitars with Carnatic classical violins backed with rock solid drums was unlike anything anyone had ever heard. With extensive airplay on Radio City and Big 92.7 FM, they made a name for themselves as a crossover band that are as comfortable with Hindi as they are with Kannada.
Swarathma went international in October 2008 with a trip to Singapore where they were one of the Indian finalists at Sutasi, a reality television series featuring the best talent from all across Asia. They were also chosen to work with acclaimed UK-based producer John Leckie (who has produced albums for the Stone Roses, Muse, Radiohead) on the British Council Soundpad project, who produced 2 tracks for them, recorded at Yash Raj Studios. This recognition proves their sound to be international, fresh, earthy and definitely Indian. With the Soundpad album slated for release in late April 2009, Swarathma are set to tour the UK in May and play at the prestigious Great Escape Festival in Brighton, along with other venues.
Swarathma have played at prestigious venues such as Mysore Yuva Dasara, alongside Usha Uthup as well as the South Asian Band Festival in February 2009. They were nominated in 3 of 8 categories in the Jack Daniel's Indian Rock Awards 2008, including Best Vocalist and Song of the Year.
