Swart (A brief overview)

The members of Swart have been playing live music for 11 years for various bands. Now a more fun take was chosen as the South African music scene tends to drift too depressing.

Swart is music for music’s sake. The idea that became Swart was concieved by Krüger van Deventer, who wrote, composed and arranged all the music and lyrics for the band’s first album “Ontsnap”.
Swart is a genre defying Afrikaans band. The line-up is a first in South African music. Krüger plays the bass and is the main vocalist and his brother, Francois, is the guitarist and backup vocalist. Stefan du Randt plays the synthesizer, Marthinus Kirsten the piano and Christiaan Rautenbach the drums. The mix of instruments creates the unique sound that Swart has founded.
Krüger and Francois played in Dammit (“When heads explode”, 2004) and This Close respectively, while Marthinus played for numerous other rock bands. Kruger started writing solo material when Dammit broke up in 2006 which evolved into what is now Swart.
“Ontsnap” was produced by Stefan du Randt and Krüger van Deventer. It was recorded at Analog-Binary and the SABC studios throughout 2007 and mastered by Infrasonic in Los Angeles.
Swart had their first live performance (open to public) on the 5th of April 2008 at Cafe Arc in Pretoria. On the 15th of July Swart launched its first music video at Tings an’ Times for the upcoming single “Vanaand”. The album will be launched in August this year. A national tour is being planned shortly follwing the album launch. Analog-Binary Records is releasing the album.
Swart is a step into the future for Afrikaans music (alternative and mainstream). The concept of Swart is to be subversive while, at the same time, creating a fresh new start for the Afrikaans music scene. The unique fusion of instruments adds to the avant-garde nature of the band. On the other hand (but not in contradiction) Swart is a step backwards with retro influences like The Cure, Depeche Mode and Fugazi.
With all the above being said, Swart is dedicated to a professional, but DIY, ethic coupled with enthusiasm towards the production of music and culture in South Africa.

Since the start of Swart people have really wanted more and more from the band, the video for the single “Vanaand” was playlisted om MK and the song “Verwag die onverwagse” was featured on TUKS FM.

Currently new material that differs somewhat, more rock ‘n roll and more ballsy, from the previous album is being recorded and will be finished by the end of the month.
