"Sweet City Action EP Review"

I was immediately attracted to Sweet City Action, long before I ever funneled their music into my headphones. I saw them at the CMC [a Gainesville music venue] about a year ago, and they harkened back to the long gone days (circa 2005) of former Gainesville band Dasi with their exuberance and quirk.
Yet, there's always that awkward feeling when a new band puts out recorded music, and that live band you've been raving about sounds like shit. But no, those worries are unfounded in this case. With their debut EP, "Open," Sweet City Action put together a tight package of mostly jumpy and always engaging pop music.
Up front are the vocals of Christina Heddesheimer, reminiscent of the Slits' Ari Up with her half spoken vocals that come so sweet and immediate from her lips that she can kiss each syllable on its way out. Even when admonishing "corporations and the RIAA" on DRM, you can't help envision her smiling.
Also reminiscent of The Slits are the songs' seemingly free form structure, with the rhythm section providing consistently interesting beats- usually in two or three disparate sections per song. This is perhaps highlighted in the chronicle of a rocky relationship, "Backbeat." The song begins with a slow burning intro with a sonorous, um, backbeat, reminiscent of The Go-Go's track, "Automatic". It then swings into a slinky section, moving in unison with the lyrics. The song repeats the technique a few times, and each time it is natural, with just enough twist to make your hairs stand on end. And it's catchy as hell.
After six songs of this you only wish it would continue, instead of the empty silence as a solid album ends. Fortunately, Sweet City Action has plenty of shows lined up in Gainesville, where they will presumably be playing more than a six-song set. Even just as a sample, "Open," should clue you in that Sweet City Action is a band to watch.
