The Swindlers are a relatively new band on the scene. Originally from Prince Albert, the band has been in saskatoon for the last few years. While working on their sound they have infused the city with a musical amalgamation consisting of rock with a little folk thrown in for good measure.
But who are The Swindlers? The driving forces are Rory Maclean (on guitar, bass and vocals) and J.R. Hewison (on guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukelele) who both discovered their love of music at an early age.
Hewison said early on he was influenced by The Beatles and then later Harry Nilsson. Maclean and Hewison originally came together and started the group in high school. They began by playing local halls with other bands who were mostly metal.
Maclean "it created an interesting dynamic of pop and metal." Since coming to Saskatoon a few years ago, the group has played around town. But Maclean said life intervened.
"Things got busy with life and school and for the last two years, we went on a bit of a hiatus. It has been J.R.'s baby and he has been driving it creatively."
The group has stayed strong through both men's passion for the band. They hope to turn a hobby into something more.
"We just want to make albums...just creating records and getting shows," said Hewison. "Our shows are the best to dance at. There is an intense energy."
The band has been working in the studio, and recently secured an agent. They have a few upcoming shows. The first is at Louis' on Nov. 28 and the other at Bud's as part of, which will eventually broadcast the event on the website.
"We're very excited about that," Maclean said. "We have made it our mission to unseat the Deep Dark Woods from their position of folk rock dominance in Saskatoon."
