"now hear this with STEPHEN COOKE"

"For a different kind of acoustic groove, Windsor's Swingology holds a CD launch at Stayner's Wharf on Saturday night. This four-piece plays light and lively Gypsy jazz a la Django Reinhardt, and judging by the generous samples on its MySpace they've got the sound down to a tee."

(August 21 2008) - Halifax Chronicle Herald

"Stan Carew (Weekend Mornings)"

Swingology's new album is a gem...the wonderful music of Django and Stephane Grappelli played with heart, soul, verve and imagination, with a few surprises, too. - CBC

"Swingology at the Halifax Jazz Festival"

The irresistible gypsy-jazz stylings of Swingology will heat up your afternoon with a performance that intertwines the music of Django Reinhardt’s Hot Club sound with Parisian musette dance music. They will have you tapping your feet in no time! - Jazz East

"Pick of the Week"

Subtitled A Gypsy Jazz Odyssey, the latest CD by Windsor’s practitioners of Hot Club-style stringed instrument swing is certainly a trip. From the City of Lights to Araby, Avalon and the comic book Manhattan of Spider-Man, the quartet is travelling light and breezy through 12 classic songs.

Violinist Andrew Kent presents the melodies with a clear and warm tone, swept along by the sprightly syncopation and nimble picking of guitarists John Tetrault and Ben Robertson, with bassist Andrew Connolly giving the tunes a reliable spine. The songs are all familiar, but Swingology freshens them up with enough personality and humour to make you anticipate each new interpretation. - Halifax Chronicle Herald

Bio

SWINGOLOGY plays Hot Club style gypsy swing – familiar, entertaining, happy, melodic music that is popular with all ages – in the tradition of the legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. Our music comes from an era when swing was the popular entertainment, and the tunes were recognizable songs with great melodies and words that left everybody humming or whistling or singing when it was over. Think Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington. Who doesn’t like that? Our songs are mostly songs you’ve heard many times before, some old, some new, but played in a way that you’ve probably never imagined.

In the 1930s, Django revolutionized music by blending swing with gypsy passion and Parisian musette dance music to create a unique style never since matched for its rhythm, inventiveness and excitement. Together with violinist Stephane Grappelli, Django founded the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, whose music continues to astonish listeners over 60 years after Django's death.

SWINGOLOGY, home-based in Windsor, Nova Scotia, delivers Django’s music to new fans throughout Atlantic Canada and elsewhere. We appear regularly at various clubs and venues in Nova Scotia, and for the last two years at the Atlantic Jazz Festival (Halifax). We are also available for private functions, weddings, conventions – our lively music can brighten pretty much any event.
