""Interview with SydneyRay - Big""

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I am from Long Island and my music is pop with a little twist of soul all with the intention of empowering others.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at 11 years old and found my strength in music and artists such as Sara Bareillesand P!nk. I became motivated to use my passion of music to help others the way music helped me. I continue on my journey of creating music because I have such a supportive family who remind me of my strength and desires everyday.

How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

“Big” is my first release and my goal with this single is to encourage people to live by their own standard and live to the “max”.

Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?

I haven’t really faced many challenges as an indie artist. Technology has benefited me by allowing me to share my story and my music with a larger platform.

Where can we connect with you online and discover more music?

My social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and SoundCloud are sydneyray03.

Anything else before we sign off?

I hope that my music can help others to face challenges with strength and courage. - Middle Tennessee Music.com

"SYDNEYRAY SHARES HER NEW SINGLE “BIG”"

Inspired by the likes of Sara Bareilles and Alessia Cara, so far, 2017 has seen Long Island native SydneyRay become established as an artist who is truly one to watch. However, she’s certainly not resting on her laurels and has big plans for the remainder of the year.

Having been diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at the age of 11, she found support and strength through music, giving her the motivation she needed to endure multiple tests and treatments. As many individuals undergoing treatment for a condition do, she turned to writing her thoughts and feelings down in a journal, eventually turning her emotions into lyrics to create her own original songs.

Now, with several releases planned for the coming months, her new single “Big” serves as a fantastic introduction for those who have yet to discover the talents of this gifted singer-songwriter.

"SydneyRay Her Story"

I remember my first karaoke machine and the pretty pink outfit I wore while singing to Madonna or Britney Spears. Like many five year old girls, I pretended I was a star on stage with everyone watching me perform and listening to my songs. Little did I know that my love of music and the pursuit of my dream to be a real singer, would become a passion with a purpose: to encourage, to inspire, to empower.

When I was eleven years old, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, a chronic, auto-immune disease for which there is currently no cure. I spent most of middle school in physical pain which was only exacerbated by the emotional stress of being an adolescent girl. After my initial diagnosis, I visited many doctors, I tried many different medicines, I endured seven colonosocopy/endoscopy procedures, I missed a lot of school, and I often struggled to feel normal. In spite of my efforts to be strong, Crohn’s controlled so much of my life from the ages of 11-14. At one point, I was taking 15 pills a day to control the symptoms of my Crohn’s. I call it “my Crohn’s” because now, as a sixteen year old, I have come to own my diagnosis. In the beginning it definitely owned me; however, thanks to music and a new medication protocol, I became the boss of my illness....... - RARE Fashion Magazine

"SydneyRay debuts quietly profound first single 'Big'"

Today, an exciting new voice has entered the pop music landscape. Singer-songwriter SydneyRay has released her debut single, a quietly profound elevated pop single titled “Big.” The piano driven track speaks to the importance of overcoming doubts and fears to embrace the fullness of life. While that sentiment might come off like an empty platitude from some performers, it has a deeper resonance coming from SydneyRay.

At 11-years-old, the Long Island native was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Consequently, she spent a lot of her childhood enduring frequent medical testing and grueling courses of treatment. During that time, SydneyRay turned to the music of artists like Sara Bareilles and Pink as a form of solace. The young performer also coped with adversity by journaling, an activity that helped her persevere and helped her develop as a songwriter. Now, SydneyRay’s interest in emotive and confessional pop music and desire to ease the burdens of others has resulted in a deeply affecting debut single that has the capacity to give support to those who need help keeping their faith.

"Check Out Sydney Ray’s Newest Single “Big” HERE! (@SydneyRay03)"

We recently had the chance to chat with the lovely Sydney Ray who released her newest single “Big” today! Sydney talked about getting her start in the industry, inspiration around “Big”, upcoming projects, and more!

Check out the song HERE —->> https://soundcloud.com/sydneyray03/big/s-c7azM

When did you get your start in singing?
If you ask my family, I have been singing my whole life. I became a little more passionate about music in general in the summer before 8th grade when I attended a one week rock band summer camp. We wrote songs and performed covers and I fell in love with both the writing and performing stages of writing. Music became a bit of an escape for me. Life offers everyone something different, and I have come to learn that through all experience, good and bad, my one constant is music.

2. Who are your musical influences?

My musical influences are Sara Bareilles and P!nk because they both inspire me to be independent and to live life according to my own standards. When I was 11 years old, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, a chronic, auto-immune disease for which there is currently no cure. When I turned 14, all medications stopped working, and my doctors put me on Remicade, an intravenously infused medication. Now, every 6 weeks my mom and I travel to Manhattan and spend the day in the pediatric oncology suite while I receive my medication. During the drive in and during the 4 hour infusion process, I listen to these artists to help me relax and to remind me that I am strong and can face any obstacle. Their musical styles and lyrics influence so many of the songs I have written.

3. How would you describe your sound?

I would say my sound is soulful with a bit of pop mixed in.

4. Who are your favorite artists?
Besides Sara Bareilles and P!nk, I’m a fan of Alesia Cara, Jon Bellion, Darius Rucker, John Mayer, and Rachel Platten.

5. Can you tell us about your new single “Big”?

“Big” is a kind of anthem for my life and the life of anyone who believes that our time here is precious and should be lived to the “max.” As I co-wrote the song with Kayliann and Doug Lowe, we discussed the shift in someone who kind of sat in the background and kept quiet. “Big” is about stepping out of one’s shell and living, loving, and dreaming about big things. “Big” is the perfect song for my first release because it encapsulates the passion I have for music and the pursuit of this dream. It also speaks to the message I want to share in my music – I want to empower people who face struggles and to remind them that they are strong.
6. What was it like getting to record the song?

Recording “Big” with grammy winner Matt Bronlewee was incredible. He is brilliant and understood the exact vibe I wanted my music to have. Being in his studio and going into the booth to record vocal tracks was a dream come true.
7. Why do you think fans are going to enjoy the song?

I hope fans hear this song and feel empowered by its message that anyone can make the choice to face a challenge and/or obstacle and to move through it with strength.

I also want people to know that it is never too late to live life the way they want and to pursue their dreams. My hope is that through sharing my music, I can help individuals who find themselves feeling alone or vulnerable, to feel encouraged and unafraid.
8. Do you have any other upcoming music or projects you can tell us about?
Yes, I’ve written a number of other songs and have been fortunate to work with incredible producers like grammy winners Jeff Pardo and Eren Cannata.
9. What are your social media accounts?
My social media accounts on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook are all sydneyray03. - Celebrity Hautespot

Today we bring you up and coming pop songstress SydneyRay – a 17 year old vocalist from Long Island that’s here to inspire you, strengthened by some of the adversity she’s already faced. When she was 11 years old, Ray was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and fell into a state of vulnerability…until the age of 13 when she found a strength in music. That power is personified in her new single, “Big”, which we had the opportunity to speak with her about – she said, “Fans can expect a ‘Big’ anthem song which they will want to blast in their houses and cars and sing along to. This song came about over the course of a few months, but writing it with Kayliann and Doug Lowe was an absolute pleasure and so much fun.” Click to https://www.instagram.com/sydneyray03/ to see more of SydneyRay and check out “Big” before more singles hit airwaves. Now, keep reading. There’s much more to get into in all the answers to the XXQs below.

XXQs: SydneyRay

PensEyeView.com (PEV): How would you describe your sound and what makes you stand out from others in your genre?

SydneyRay (SR): My sound is mostly pop with a little bit of soul mixed in. I think being an artist driven to empower others sets me apart from others in my genre.

PEV: At only 17 years old and hailing from Long Island, what kind of music were you into growing up? Do you remember your first concert?

SR: When I was little I would sing karaoke versions of songs by Britney Spears and Madonna, but as I grew up I began to love P!nk and Sara Bareilles. My first concert was the Jonas Brothers when I was 8 years old. I remember being obsessed with them and even (embarrassingly) having a life-size flathead of all three of them in my room.

PEV: What was it like trying to break into the music scene when you first started? What was your first show like?

SR: Trying to break into the music scene is definitely a difficult process because there are so many steps that lead up to releasing one single. My first show was beyond amazing and exciting because it was the first time I was sharing my music.

PEV: What can fans expect from a live SydneyRay show?

SR: From a live SydneyRay show, fans can expect a lot of anthem songs that they can feel empowered by.

PEV: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you step on stage to perform?

SR: The first thing that comes to mind when I step on stage to perform is my daily reminder to always “Dream, Love, and Live, BIG”.

PEV: What is the best part about being on stage in front of an audience?

SR: The best part about being on stage is getting to see all of my fans singing along to my songs.

PEV: What is the underlying inspiration for your music?

SR: When I was 11 years old, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and fell into a state of vulnerability which continued heavily throughout my life until the age of 13 when I found a strength in music. Artists like Sara Bareilles and P!nk wrote and produced songs about being unique and breaking the social norms which is what gave me a newfound strength and a desire to help others the way they inspired me.

PEV: Thinking back to when you first started out, do you ever look back on your career and think about your earlier days and how you’ve arrived where you are today?

SR: Always! I always remember the first day I got my piano, the first day I entered IMTA (a talent competition), and the first day I came up with the song title “Big”. It’s so crazy to see how everything has come together over the past few years and it makes me beyond excited to see what the future holds.

PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about you?

SR: One thing you’d be surprised to hear about me, is that in my early stage of diagnosis I was taking 15 pills a day, every day, for almost a year.

PEV: What happens when you hit a brick wall when writing? What are your methods to get over it?

SR: When I have a tough time writing, I like to stop and close my eyes and picture every moment in my life when I was feeling vulnerable, that way I can remember what I would’ve wanted someone to say to me in those moments.

PEV: How do you think the industry has changed since you first started out?

SR: I think the industry has made me a tougher person, while making me a better singer, songwriter, producer, and musician.

PEV: What can fans expect from your debut single, a quietly profound elevated pop song titled “Big”? What was the writing process like for this work?

SR: Fans can expect a “Big” anthem song which they will want to blast in their houses and cars and sing along to. This song came about over the course of a few months, but writing it with Kayliann and Doug Lowe was an absolute pleasure and so much fun.

PEV: With all your traveling, is there one area you wish you could travel around and play that you have not yet?

SR: I would love to travel to Greece and Australia one day.

PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your career?

SR: I’m beyond grateful for how much support I have received from all of my family and friends. Nothing makes me happier than knowing so many people support my decisions, my career, and my music.

PEV: What do you do in your spare time, aside from playing/writing music?

SR: I enjoy spending my spare time with my family. They’re my biggest supporters and the people who have made me as strong as I am today.

PEV: Name one present and past artist or group that would be your dream collaboration. Why?

SR: I would love to work with Sara Bareilles because she is my biggest influence, my idol, and the reason I have such a passion for music and desire to use my passion to help others. One past artist I’d love to work with would be Frank Sinatra because he’s one of the all-time greatest musicians ever.

PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?

SR: I’ve become a major fangirl of Lauv.

PEV: If playing music wasn’t your life (or life’s goal), what would you do for a career?

SR: My favorite subject in school is English so I would love to teach high school English.

PEV: So, what is next for SydneyRay?

SR: I’m hoping to release more singles throughout the summer hopefully leading up to something bigger in 2018.

Bio

In the beginning it definitely owned me; however, thanks to music and a new medication protocol, I became the boss of my illness.

When I turned 14, all medications stopped working, and we were left with only two options, both of which were scary.  These Biologic medications weaken the immune system and can often lead to serious complications.  I started Remicade infusions in May 2015. It is intravenously infused into the bloodstream through a four hour process. Since then, every 6 weeks my mom and I travel to Manhattan and spend the day in the pediatric oncology suite. I became inspired by the courage and grace of the children I met at the oncology suite - children of all ages, some receiving similar infusions, others there for more aggressive chemotherapy treatment. Being there and seeing those children sitting in their hospital beds made me realize what I could do, what I want to do.

During the drive in and while receiving the infusions, I listen to music -- mostly P!nk and Sara Bareilles -- to help me relax and to remind me that I am strong and can face any obstacle.  Both of these artists inspire me to be independent and to live life according to my own standards.  Most importantly, they along with my experience in the oncology suite inspired me to become a songwriter.

I started writing lyrics in a little journal and slowly taught myself basic piano.  The first song I wrote is called “Alright,” and the message of the song is that no matter what is happening in your life, people are there to help.  With that first song my journey began.  I have spent the past year and a half collaborating with other songwriters and producers, traveling to Nashville, and performing at live events. I am now prepared to release my first single and share my message of empowerment with others.

Life offers everyone something different, and I have come to learn that through all experience, good and bad, my one constant is music.  My hope is that through sharing my music, I can help individuals who find themselves feeling alone or vulnerable, to feel encouraged and unafraid.
