Bio

Singer, songwriter Sylence Johnson was born into a family of jazz musicians on July 21st.

From birth, music was part of his daily diet, and by the age of nine he was singing as a soprano in the infamous Red Seas gospel choir in New Jersey. By 11 he had started touring the USA with the Red Seas and was performing to audiences as large as 25,000.

By the time he reached his early teens, Sylence had begun to write his own songs, and people around him were encouraging him to embark on a solo career.

At 15, he left the USA and began to travel around Europe with his father. It was then that his musical journey really began, when he started to discover his own sound and realised that he had a flare for song-writing. He started to work as a songwriter and backing dancer for various artists in Europe.

When he returned home to New York, he formed a song writing partnership with ex-Sony Studios engineer and producer Eric Roos (Maxwell, Chico Debarge, BB King, Herbie Hancock, Cyndi Lauper). Together they formed Dangeroos Music.

Sylence has worked with such greats as Kelly Brown, Natalie Cole and Whitney Houston, his gift was recognised and commented on by George Benson, Anita Davis (of New York’s famous Village Underground) Lydia Bourgeois and the late Ahmet Ertegun of Atlantic Records, who was so blown away the first time he heard Sylence sing, he is quoted as saying ‘You have a very, very special gift, make sure that you use it in the right way’.

Sylence’s life story translates throughout all of his songs. His music is about the reality of life and the reality of struggle that forces you to embrace change. His story is far deeper and way more interesting than one can ever imagine. It will all be revealed in time. In the meantime, may the music speak…
