Sylvarnes / Vangen

Sylvarnes / Vangen presents us with a unique encounter between the oldest traditional music and the newest creative music. The sound of the primitive ram’s horn takes us back to the cradle of music. Odd Sylvarnes Lund extends the boundaries for what has previously been considered possible to achieve on this instrument, and together with Roar Vangen’s spirited and creative guitar playing we venture into a hitherto unknown musical landscape. In the same way the Jew’s harp in combination with the guitar gives a suggestive, resilient new driving force to the respective melodies. The different expressions in the groups repertoire vary from slow and melancholic to forceful, wild and temperamental.
All the music performed by Sylvarnes/Vangen is self-composed, but clearly influenced by Norwegian folk music.

Odd Sylvarnes Lund has performed in more than 20 different countries and in most of the larger Norwegian cities. During the opening ceremony at the Olympic Games in Lillehammer Odd Sylvarnes Lund participated as a soloist playing the lure, the ram’s horn and the Jew’s harp. Furthermore, he has on numerous occations been engaged by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for special Norwegian events abroad.

Roar Vangen has been playing the guitar for 40 years within the fields of rock, heavy-rock, pop and other styles of music. The last 6-7 years he has concentrated on composing his own music , inspired by Norwegian folk music. In 2004 he recorded the solo-CD “String”. Here he demonstrated possible ways to make both creative, exciting and accessible instrumental music with the main focus on the guitar.
