Bio
Founded in Montreal (Summer of 2013), the band is comprised of Bradley Murphy, Anna Lyon and Sarah C Louise. Our sound is created using traditional instruments (accordion, fiddle and drums) to build dramatic compositions. Our songs have roots in alternative blues, Cape Breton Fiddle and cabaret folk, with a poetic lyrical structure.
Our musical performance incorporates an air of theatrics, with Sylvia as our guide. She is a heroine, a God, who demands our musical abilities to share her story. Each song is related to a significant episode of her life, and each influenced her ultimate end. Following her death, she appointed her Subordinates from beyond the grave to present her memoir with rich costumes, vibrant lights and honest words (and forewarn the world not to repeat her mistake...) through a staged musical act called Sylvia's Mistake.
Accordion bellows, syrupy fiddle, and earthy percussion, straight from the mucky mud. Sylvia's Mistake is a new variety of folk narrative, with influences from all over Canada.
Here is a review of our show from the excellent Gern of the late, great band the United Steel Workers of Montreal:
"An unlikely trio of Vocals, Violin, Accordion and Drums will find you mid set mesmerized only then noticing only briefly the lack of guitars and bass, the moment passes as you are swept up into yet another slick and soaring flouish of terror, love, loss, and whirling images, this is Sylvia's Mistake attacking a bad crowd, not your average 3 pc band, wow, a must see. Gern F, - bartender, writer, musician, private citizen, man about town."
