"Musician T.L. Williams talks new album and working at Donda’s House"

Chicago-based singer, songwriter, producer and actor T. L. Williams is truly a Renaissance man.

First introduced to the piano as a toddler, Williams has gone on to take up the bass and trumpet and has since effectively combined the best sounds of R&B, jazz and pop to stand out and create a new sound that is all his own.

After a breakout 2014 that saw his release “Gettin’ Mo Money Than You” gain him fans around the world including Japan, Spain, and even Australia, Williams is poised to share more of his textured trumpet, soothing beats and rhythmic vocals on his forthcoming album, The T.L. Williams Experience.

In addition to music, Williams is also an alumna of the conservatory at The Second City, Chicago’s historic improv mecca, and also finds time to be a music mentor, working with Donda’s House, the Chicago based organization (started by Kanye West, Che “Rhymefest” Smith and Donnie Smith) dedicated to providing arts and artist development opportunities for youth.

We recently caught up with Williams to talk about his work with Donda’s House, what fans can expect from his new album, and what it means to be at an “All White Party Wearing Black.”

Even though you’re a working and traveling musician, you still make time to work with youth at Donda’s House. Why is it important to you to make time for youth no matter what?
From my work with Donda’s House to my own projects, I believe sharing music makes Chicago … and the world better. As a musician, I know that if it weren’t for arts programs, I could be lost. Now, I get the chance to share with youth and keep them engaged and inspired to do great things with their lives and talent.

Your current single, “All White Party Wearing Black,” seems to tell the tale of a man who dares to stand out. What was the inspiration behind the song?
It’s a song for those who aren’t scared to be different. I wanted to write a theme song for those who don’t want to be defined by what society tells them to do. The moment the song starts there are these horns that you can walk into a room to … superhero music, if you will.

What can you tell us about your latest release, The T.L. Williams Experience?
I am really excited about this new project. It’s really near and dear to me. There have been so many changes in my life and music since my debut and I think The T. L. Williams Experience exposes more of who I am and allows my fans to get to know me on another level.

"(New Music) Listen to All White Party Wearing Black by T. L. Williams"

Chicago’s very own T.L. Williams dropped a new single titled “All White Party Wearing Black”. I have to say this single reminds me of a classic Al Green single. T.L. Williams has been everywhere, his music is being played all around Chicago. If you go to the Skating rink or a festival in Chicago I’m sure you heard his single “Get More Money Than You”, listen below. - K Brand University
