tabadoul orchestra feat. Dina Gouda

presents: world wide wahab

The tabadoul orchestra, founded in summer 2010 by musicians from the world music collective Schäl Sick Brassband together with guests and the charismatic Egyptian singer Dina Gouda, presents their first live program at the same time as their debut CD: world wide wahab. The first of its kind in Europe, this program is dedicated to the most important composer of the 20th century Arabian world: the Egyptian Mohammed Abdel Wahab.

Mohammed Abdel Wahab, who died in 1991, was one of the most significant and innovative composers of the Arabian world. He is seen as the inventor of the Arabian film musical and introduced instruments such as electric guitars, electric pianos and electric organs to Arabian music, resulting in a completely new style. With the use of Latin American dance rhythms such as beguine, rumba or cha-cha coupled with the traditional sounds of an Egyptian string orchestra, his innovative orchestration and composition technique and a life's work of around 1,000 compositions, Mohammed Abdel Wahab stands head and shoulders above other Egyptian musicians. He like no other was able to combine the traditions of old Arabic music with the new, the oriental with the west, which not only led to fame amongst his own generation. Along with Sayed Darwish, Mohammed Abdel Wahab is considered to be the pioneer and innovator of Arabic art music. From today's perspective, he could even be classed as an early Frank Zappa of the Arabic music world...

Raimund Kroboth and his musical companions have been fascinated for a long time by the seemingly impossible, eclectic mixture of belly-dance and Bavaria, folklore and thriller soundtrack. The recently established contact to the young, charismatic singer Dina Gouda, who grew up in Cairo, spurred the musicians on to finally set this project in motion. With other members such as the Czech Jura Wajda, whose virtuosity on the cymbalon (...originally a Hungarian gypsy dulcimer) produces incredible parallels to Wahab's qanun (...the Egyptian zither) soundscapes, taraf violinist Nina Leonards and accordionist Martin Kübert, the tabadoul orchestra has once again expanded their sound spectrum and is the first ever European ensemble to bring the music of Abdel Wahab, largely unknown in Germany, into the 21st century with passion and fascination.

Directly after its formation, the tabadoul orchestra takes a tremendous kick-off on the European world- music stage : the group enthused a big audience with their stage-premiere during the international Ankara Jazzfestival, followed by performances in St. Petersburg (Russia), as top-act for the Finals of „creole worldmusic contest germany“ and at the WDR3 jazz.cologne-festival. In November 2010 they accompanied the ceremonies of the most important german theatre-award „DER FAUST“ in a television live-broadcast and for 2011there are already invitations for the Alexandria international worldmusic Festival and for concerts in Cairo. They will also play the Amsterdam Roots Festival...
