"TabulaRasa CD Release show"

September 1990

Vol 2 No 9

TabulaRasa
New Orleans Music Hall
By Annie Lousteau
With 4 For Nothing opening, Tabula Rasa celebrated the release of their self-titled, all-original CD/cassette with a show at New Orleans Music Hall on Aug. 18. A packed house of trendily-garbed youth danced, cheered, whistled, and rocked their way through Tabula Rasa’s set.
The good-sizd delightfully muraled venue was the perfect setting for Tabula’s colorful music. Their live playlist includ¬ed a few covers, such as the Grateful Dead’s “He1p On The Way/Slipknot,” and King Crimson’s ‘21st Century Schizoid Man, but mostly they specialized in their original songs, producing the psychedelic fusion rock that is their passion.
From the unusual visual effects (pro¬duced by Cloud 9) to their demanding, “break-the-mold” style of music, Tabula Rasa avoids the mundane and shuns com¬parison. They have wiped the rock slate clean enough to leave their own distinct musical imprint.
Their songs and rock/art performance reflect a multitude of changes in mood and rhythm. The extended improvisations are always chancy, but they pay off. That’s what it means to be on the cutting edge.
Tabula Rasa is currently touring the southeast for the next several months, inc1uding visits to Florida, Alabama, and Virginia. They’ll be back in New Or1eans on Sept19 at Jimmy’s to renew their relationship to the faithful There are plans to market the CD on a vinyl format in Europe, and the Tabula Rasa CD is being played nationwide on college stations. They have even made it to the BBC, where songs from the CD are being featured on the “Dr. Rock” show in England. Bio

Tabula Rasa, the passionate, professional cinematic rock group with 25+ years experience composing, recording and performing, has created a captivating, genre-crossing sound hard to classify yet uniquely recognizable and accessible by combining the best elements of rock, jazz, funk and classical into a coherent and momentously moving, grooving, thoughtful yet visceral toe-tapping soundscape.

This unique combination is the heartbeat of an enveloping presentation by 'the top underground group in New Orleans since 1988'.

Influenced by progressive rock, 'jam band' and New Orleans funk, TR presents the excitement and depth of grand themes while stripping away fluff and excess, always with purpose and groove-ability.

After a post-Katrina hiatus, TR is retooled and sharper than ever, as demonstrated by the hard hitting songs on their recent release 'Epoch' (2012).

Some live highlights include:

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival WDSU stage

Rock for the Rain Forest

Opening stints with The Swans, Alex Chilton and The Slamming Watusis

Live-to-vinyl multi-arts performance at Never Records (Resolution - TRM / Never records - 2012)

Numerous live cable and regional TV performances

With their own pro studio built in 2007, the members have generated an extensive catalogue of music, both as a group and as individual content creators, building on the new Internet driven music paradigm.

The band has also recently produced a critically acclaimed collaboration with Cyril Neville (The Neville Brothers) and his son Omari, culminating in the wildly successful 'Nevillution' show at Tipitina's Downtown New Orleans (2010).

An Historical Aside: The band's offshoot project 'Machine Screw' (1994 - 1997) was the first group to multicast live over the Internet (Sept. 4th, 1994 from The Black Cat in Austin Tx.), using modified software from Cornell U. Their series of groundbreaking Internet streaming shows landed them on The Discover Channel special 'Cyberspace', along with Laurie Anderson.

With thier powerful combination of experience, passion, commitment and chemistry, Tabula Rasa continues to break new ground in the creative arts, proving that music is truly a universal language.
