Bio
TABURA is a collective of Melbourne based West Papuan musicians who are breaking new ground with a unique blend of music crossing traditional and contemporary genres. The band fuses original songs along with the classic tunes of their forefathers. With a name that translates to music-making and a sense of gathering in Melanesian and Oceanic cultures, TABURA inspires a sense of unity through their notoriously carnivalesque performances. They are the re-inventors of traditional Papuan music- hailing back to Papuan legend, songman and musicologist, Arnold Ap and the famous Black Brothers, TABURA continues to spread the word for West Papuas fight for independence.
Regarded as the next generation of the Black Brothers, the troupe is elegantly fronted by angelic voices of the Rumwaropen sisters, wicked moves of cassowary dancers and backed by a contented rhythm section of drums, percussion, bass and propelling keys.
Formerly established in 2009, TABURA appeared on diverse events over the years on Sing Sing concert, ABC Radio Music Deli program, Black Harmony Day, Food & Wine Festival, Australasian World Music Expo (AWME) and Emerge Festival.
The troupe has performed alongside David Bridie, Grilla Step, Gulaan (Kanaky), Albert David, Culture Connect and recently featured in George Telek's (PNG) merdeka film clip, Richard Mogu's (PNG) debut album and Blue King Brown new film clip.
