"Next Exit: Beautiful Life “Sometimes it takes the help of strangers for us to see the miracle”"

It’s a Friday night in 1987 at the opening of Next Exit: Beautiful Life. We are in the hip neighborhood of Los Angeles, called Silverlake. Standing in a line outside of a very popular trendy restaurant a 20 year old Taffy and her oldest friend Rocki are on the town for a girls night out when two strangers confront Taffy with a question that propels her, and us, on a journey of discovery.

We barrel thru the memories seeing Taffy’s life journey to this point ultimately coming to a pivotal and surprising moment of deep awakening. We experience flashbacks beginning with her formative years in Compton, to economic family windfall and ‘move on up’ to the hills of Beverly Hills and all the way back down again, landing upon the memory of a long forgotten miracle.

We open to the 20 year old Taffy being confronted with a question, and are flashed back to her first question of her mother at age 6 “Mommy are we white, when we go out of Compton and colored when we go back in ?..... Like the lights on the cars mommy!!”

Through the narrator we learn that taffy is a native Los Angeleno, “I grew up here, in a car”. “My (precocious) six year old imagination created a theory: See I was fascinated by the night-lights of all the cars. The lights represented blood cells, blood corpuscles red and white flying through veins and arteries covering the body of my hometown, Los Angeles, Compton.”

Taffy at 13 attending her first rock concert. Mommy resists giving Taffy the permission to go the rock concert “ you’ll be the only little chocolate drop out there” she tells Taffy who has taken on the persona of a cockney English girl who as fallen madly in love with the lead singer of “The Who”. Mommy finally gives in and we go with Taffy to the concert, it turns out mommy was right!

Traversing the outstretched landscape of Los Angeles the freeway metaphor shaping the inner landscape of a young woman straddling the complexities of race, class, identity and ultimately self love. Taffy breathes life into all of the many characters in this wonderfully layered, uplifting, story within a story.
