"Take Part - Albert"

Take Part - Albert
Pop Rock's not normally my thing. I usually stray away from it all, occasionally embracing a track or two from a particular band but rarely ever feeling the need to get into the whole album. Usually there's some brooding producer making sure every track has the same magic touch, ultimately taking away any flair from the entirety of the album.

Until today, the day I finally hear of Take Part. A small Indie-Pop-Rock band from Nova Scotia, Canada. If you like smooth vocals, general Indie Rock, and a pinch of Pop, you should already be giving them a listen.

It was actually hard for me to pick a favorite track this time. This one's just lucky to have its own video and be among the top rated within my notes. It shows they have a thing for catchy lyrics as well as an understanding for musical climax. They know how to build the roller coaster so you can best enjoy the ride.

Being someone who doesn't frequently enjoy Pop-anything, this is something I could grow to love. Maybe their roller coaster wasn't as well laid out throughout the album, but the individual tracks have their spark. There's actually a few songs I could see topping charts and gaining excessive play on the radio.

I'm actually glad they haven't been discovered. Or maybe I'm just glad they weren't discovered before this debut was released. They have the spark, they have that commercial touch big record labels like to exploit, and it's because they don't yet have that executive voice hovering over their shoulder that such an album could be made.

Not perfect. Not every track was fully enjoyed, and that's not really saying much for someone who usually doesn't like 'Pop' much anyway. So if you're intrigued, if you don't mind the near boy-band vocals or the occasional Pop percussion, I'd give it a listen. You can own it for whatever price you're willing to pay. - D4am.net

"Halifax Pop Explosion Day 1 Review"

Take Part brings consistency on every show they play, and this was no exception. Take Part’s perfectly blended pop and indie melodies ruled over the crowd, and every foot in the Seahorse was stomping. As their set peaked with the crowd favourite “The Harbour,” the band let their instruments go silent during the chorus while the audience screamed the words in unison with the band members. Take Part is fresh off the release of their latest EP and they show no signs of slowing down the steamroller that is their band. - Mixtape halifax

Bio

Taking pieces from the Halifax pop scene of the 90s, a little Cali pop-punk and the echoing choruses of stadium rock, Take Part have been making honest, straight forward rock music since 2010.

Colin Darcy (vocals, guitar) and Curtis Spriggs (keys, vocals, guitar) started writing songs together in early 2010, with their complimentary musical styles and influences creating the foundation for Take Part. Curtis younger brother Eddie, (bass, vocals) and drummer Sean Parsons joined the band later that year. Influenced mainly by the Beatles, the Beach Boys and early Blink 182, Take Part employs bits and pieces of their largest influences to create a rock and roll Frankenstein's monster that is fresh, upbeat, and most importantly, fun as hell. Together, these guys use the guitar, keys, bass and drums band-member-composition to form a uniquely retro sound that is somewhere in between pop-punk and classic rock, layering lush vocal harmonies and dual guitars over a driving rhythm section.

In a live setting, Take Part combines their high-energy sound with their peculiar sense of humour to create an atmosphere at live shows that fills the room with laughter, fun, and the occasional sound of a band. A Take Part live show is something to be had. Their confident stage presence and constant banter between the band and the audience is hilariously entertaining, with the guys refusing to take themselves too seriously.  As a result of their on stage energy, they have built a continuously expanding, and equally as energetic fan base.

With Curtis at the helm, using his knowledge of the recording process, Take Part have released two self produced recordings; their debut full - length Albert in the summer of 2012, and a five track EP The Harbour released in October 2013. With a busy schedule playing shows, writing, and recording, the guys rounded off 2013 with a hectic October and November, showcasing in Toronto for Indie Week, back home for Halifax Pop Explosion, and finally in Sydney Cape Breton for Nova Scotia Music Week. 2014 is looking to be a busy year, with tours to be planned, accepting a slot at Canadian Music Week in May and working alongside Liam Concoran of Two Hours Traffic.
