"The Revelstoke Free Press"

"It is impossible to box Tambura Rasa into a genre, with them dipping into Spanish, African, Latin and Gypsy styles. Tambura Rasa have definitively built a reputation for big festival and theatre shows using flamboyant flamenco and belly dancers to transport their audiences through time and across continents." - by Steph Flemings

Bio

Ivan of Serbo-Croatian descent was born in Belgrade, Serbia. He spent the first eight years of his childhood in the plains of central Turkey after which he moved back to Serbia, both the crossroads of Eastern and Western Cultures. Throughout the years, Ivan has traveled extensively in pursuit of artistic inspiration. Since moving to Vancouver and finishing his computer science and physics honors program at University of British Columbia, he formed the Tambura Rasa collective with the aim of expanding the boundaries of world-fusion music.

As a writer and a composer, Ivan’s artistic inclinations have taken him into various directions: releasing six collections of original compositions under the world fusion act Tambura Rasa and one album with pianist Oriana White called “Vino & Forte”, with influences that span from Indian classical to Turkish, Balkan, Flamenco and Classical music. He produced electronic mixes, some of which were released on the European “Cafe del Mar” lounge compilations. Besides the core Tambura Rasa ensemble, Tucakov collaborates with string quartets, flamenco dance troupes, classical pianists and a variety of other guest artists during his live shows.

As an author, Ivan Tucakov also advocates a life of self-awareness, wellbeing and nurturing, loving connections. He has written a book on human connection and conflict resolution called “The Mindful Connection Method”. He maintains an active blog on these topics, organizes and moderates discussion practice workshops and educational speaker series through the “The Compass Within” organization.

Tambura Rasa blends genres and cultures from every continent on three powerful albums starting with the release of “Sunrise on a New World” in 2004. In 2006, the band followed that CD up with ‘Viaje’ (Journey) and then with the latest project in 2008, ‘Kamanala’ (Sanskrit for Fire of Love). The famous lounge compilation ‘Café del Mar’ (vol XIII and XVI) released Electronic mixes of two of their songs, Cinnabar and Gypsy Love from the 2009 ‘Tambura Rasa Beats’ collection and hit world music charts and air-waves all around the planet. His last three releases, “Tambura Rasa Beats”, “Adsum” and “In Concert” were nominated for the “Western Canadian Music Award” Best World Recordings of the Year in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Global in its reach, Tambura Rasa has become BC’s favorite caravan of vivacious globalistas, filling everything from intimate soft-seat theatre shows, large dance filled festivals to hip urban clubs in attempt to bring dance, joy and vigor to the world around them.
