"Tammy T Breathe Me In and Broken Friendships"

In the past months, vocalist Tammy T has released two singles “Breathe Me In” and “Broken Friendships” that give listeners a hint of what to expect on her upcoming album Unconventional, which is set to be released in early 2012. Her music has elements of R&B and hip-hop, but cannot be strictly categorized as such, just as Aaliyah’s music never fit into a certain genre. What is more appropriate is to focus on the overall mood evoked and created by her music, which is a smooth and laid back feeling. Her first single “Breathe Me In” is an airy, spacey, gem with a continuous mist of synth chords mixed in with a grooving back beat. All of this is backing Tammy T’s incredibly soulful voice.

A video, produced by Dark Glory, for “Breathe Me In” was released this past October and she hopes to film a second video for “Broken Friendships” very soon. The latter was produced by California native Tony Sway and was premiered last Tuesday, November 8th, on Street Sounds with Don Smooth K103 F.M. This track has more of the same chill out vibe as the first single, but here Tammy T proves she is feisty with lyrics, such as “I was never one to follow rules”.

I had the opportunity to interview Tammy T last week and talk to her about her upcoming album and how her career started. She explained that she grew up going back and forth between Philadelphia and Montreal, that her father, Melvin Terrell, had toured with The Beatles and then became the manager and creative director for Mary Wells. Undoubtedly, Tammy T grew up in a very musical environment. As she got older, she began to sing more and more often in French, although her first language is English. Then, there came a time where she took a break from singing to get her priorities straight. Now, she’s back in the game, performing more often and promoting her upcoming album. Her most recent gig was at a breast cancer benefit concert and the performance that perhaps kicked started her career was singing a duet with Mario Pelchat.

Tammy T will be performing this Sunday at Cafe Chaos with some of Montreal finest french hip-hop artists. You can also check her out acting the lead part in the musical “L’Amour… À Quel Prix” with Marco Volcy on December 3rd at Concordia’s Oscar Peterson Hall. Her two singles “Breathe Me In” and “Broken Friendships” are available for free download on her website.

Bio

80's baby, Tammy Terrell was born in Montreal, Canada to an African-American father and a Canadian mother. Growing up in the era of Blues, Jazz and Classic R&B, it has made music a Paramount component in her household. At a young age she absorbed knowledge from her father, Melvin Terrell - Musical Director for the late Mary Wells. As Tammy developed a love story with music, she realized how deep it ran through her veins. Having a MD as a father has installed important values in Tammy T's personal life and has molded her into the artist and human being she is today. With her father's influence, music has always been a constant part of Tammy's life.

As a child she mastered her craft by learning the piano and flute and as a teenager she developed her talent while concentrating on her vocals. Tammy T is a natural born singer, with no experience under her belt she learned various techniques by simply listening to her favorite icons: Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. With determination she explored the extraordinary capacities of her voice as she learned about emotions, feelings, passion and her powerful range.

When referring to her music Tammy T often says “I’ve been through a lot in my life… and my music reflects who I AM and what I’ve been through”. Her music reflects her life's struggles as it mixes soul, hip-hop, r&b. The joy and pain felt in her past can be heard in her soulful spirit, powerful vocals and raw lyrics. If asked about her style, she will answer “I’m just the girl next door… with a lil’ extra Attitude & Swag”.

Tammy T is currently in the lab working on her debut release available this Fall. In the meantime she's rising to stardom with her debut single Breathe Me In. This is the first of many more projects you will hear from Tammy T….She was "Born to Sing".
