"Two Great Voices: Tanya & Lee"

Tanya Auclair was first recommended to Fresh On The Net by the wonderful Ruth Barnes and from the moment of first hearing the opening bars of this song I knew we were in the presence of a major new talent. Tanya came in to record a session for us at BBC 6 Music where her combination of musical daring, emotional conviction and mastery of loopstation technology left me speechless. Great as this studio recording is, it’s live that she truly shines. - Fresh on the Net

"Guillemots / Tanya Auclair live review from Exeter Phoenix - Weds 2nd November 2011"

Tonight's excursion gently laps into view with the gorgeous voice and engaging persona of Tanya Auclair, a delightful songstress who creates live magic on stage with a sampler and fiery imagination. With ukelele and portable keyboard to the fore, she brings a welcome organic element to her performance. Sounds float from her electronic squeezebox, mixed with pure tones and sweet ululations.

In between, she whiles away the spare seconds with a mini-travelogue, spanning Gothenburg to Lapland...

Tanya is a delight; she has a 'smile' in her voice, going up and down the octaves declaiming "hear that whistle blow!!!", scaling arpeggio cliffs and setting her spirit free in this unassuming hall, her temple for the evening.

She samples her own voice, instantly conjuring up a compressed harmonic choir of angel chords. Rounding off her famous set with a mind blowingly fantastic version of Roy Davis Jr's 'Gabriel', deconstructed into a perfectly poised acoustic serenade, one can imagine the stars outside sparkling that little bit brighter, in unison of course. - Music Muso

"Unsigned + Free Music: Tanya Auclair"

Spinning a web of intricate pick 'n' mix rhythms, beats, and melodies, Auclair's debut EP has quickly lifted her to the top of London's underground soul scene and, unbelievably, it's FREE!

We’re officially late to join the party. Tanya Auclair, an alternative and unsigned soul singer from London, released her debut EP Thrum on July 20 and we only found out about it last week.

Another artist taking the bold move of giving away their first record free, this is most likely the best freebie you’ll be laying your hands on in 2010. With influences stretching to include PJ Harvey, Beck, Fever Ray, Fela, TV on the Radio and underground LA soulstress Georgia Anne Muldrow, Thrum's make-up already promises to be everything but your average retro-slinging soulscapade that has been wrapping its vines around the charts over the past couple of years. - Bearded Magazine

"Audio: Tanya Auclair – Origami [EP]"

One of the best things I can say about Tanya Auclair is that it’s hard to find reference points to describe her music cause its so damn original…but luckily the nice thing about music this unique is that the most mundane tags and liner note info read like some kind of mad haiku thats a far better analog of the music than anything I could write. So if just listening to these three songs that comprise her Origami EP (below) is not enough, here’s everything you need to know before you go here and try to be one of the first 1000 fools to download it free: vocals, ukelele, Microkorg, handclaps, mbira, programming, double bass, gender, experimental, folk, origami, ep, pop, London. If that’s still not enough, find out more here. God, you are so linear.

Bio

Hailing from west London, via Canada and Rwanda – Tanya Auclair's musical upbringing straddled very different worlds. Citing influences as wide-ranging as Bongo Joe Coleman, Juana Molina, The Staple Singers, Laurie Anderson, Matthew Herbert and E.S.G, her open instinctive approach shows in the territory she covers in a beguiling mix of playful DIY drums, layers of voice, intricate melodies and touches of electronica.

Armed with just a digital recorder, FruityLoops and some instruments she wrote and produced her debut solo release, EP ‘Thrum’, which came out to rave reviews by blogs internationally and has had fervent support from Resonance FM, BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson, ?uestlove’s Okay Africa, Eska and 4Hero’s Marc Mac. “A road-trip round Sweden set this fever off in me. Initially it was an experiment, taking some of my favourite things about music - primal rhythms, loads of vocal harmonies and straight-up melodies – and it turned into its own little beast, making me dig deeper, to where everything thrums.”

An excitement for music made from ‘minimal means’ has given rise to her distinctive sound and compelling one-woman-band show. She builds her songs live, sampling her voice with a loop pedal, playing ukulele, guitar and percussion.

The multi-instrumentalist has worked with the likes of Matthew Herbert’s Big Band Ensemble, Yult and Charlie Dark, she features on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Bubblers Vol 7. Her new EP Origami is out now.
