"Sirens and Lovers Review"

Tanya Brody loves bathing herself in semi-gothic trappings. Her CD is titled Sirens & Lovers, and on the CD sleeve she appears submerged within a pre-Raphaelite painting. Likewise, her choice of material leans heavily on the epic ballad with gothic overtones -- 'Maid in Bedlam', 'Thyme', 'Barbara Allen', and 'One I love' included -- so high drama is often the order of the day. Her own material has titles like 'Sailor's Curse' and 'Siren's Defeat', and it fits into the concept of heavy story songs with a gothic slant, complete with all the dramatic trappings.
One would expect a modicum of theatricality to seep through in the application and approach, but thankfully that is not the case. Tanya Brody is a singer and harpist -- the sensibilities of Loreena McKennit also float around occasionally -- and has a voice that is operatic in tone, with exquisite clarity and breath control. One assumes she has had training at some point. Chamber music style arrangements highlight the gothic element, and occasionally she strains to reach notes, although this is more a technical shortcoming than a performance glitch. The album as a whole has a strange beguiling charm that begs one to continue listening, and with its highly ornate arrangements and settings on the right side of ethereal, Sirens & Lovers will definitely appeal to listeners who like their folk music with a pre-Raphaelite tinge.

Bio

A born musician and performer, Tanya Brody understands what it is to tell a story through song and the art of giving life to the words and music that flow from her lips and fingertips. Her traditional repertoire is vast and covers several centuries of traditional Celtic and British folk music. Her original music ranges from songs that sound like they were written hundreds of years ago, to music that captures the humor and pulse of everyday life. She accompanies herself on the harp and guitar, and has played all over the country.

A Harper/Singer/Songwriter, Tanya has been performing professionally since the age of 6 and playing music either for fun or as a profession for most of her life. She has performed all over the world, either as a solo performer or as a member of various other groups during her long musical career. She plays multiple instruments, the primary being the harp, and sings with the voice of an angel according to her many fans. She performs both traditional and original music and has 9 albums to her name, 4 of which are solo, the rest are with either The Muses, her professional touring Celtic band, or with Sailors Dream, a 3 woman a cappella group.

Tanya has returned to her roots as a solo performer bringing her talent and love of music back to appreciative audiences everywhere. People around the world have heard her music, on the radio and via the internet. She continues to create beautiful sounds to share with all who will listen.
