Tanya Fermin wants to give you a Special Invitation to her world. She lets you in by making her way through 12 tracks of sweet soul, rhythm and blues and jazz. Her voice is rich and deep with expressiveness and those aspects come through beautifully on every track on her new album.

“What I Miss Most” is sprinkled with jazz via the smooth tones of the saxophone and the in-the-backseat-groove of the bass while “Your Love Looks Good on Me” features a calypso-reggae atmosphere, as her sensual voice invites you to her island paradise. The soulful and moving “Live the Lie,” digs down deep into the shadows of a remorseful person just dying to change, giving the listener a thing or two to think about lyrically while the music keeps you in an endless chill out of musical bliss. This is the kind of variety found on this recording. Her voice is so flexible and strong that it could adapt to any genre of music without difficulty.

I enjoyed the interplay of jazz elements more than anything I heard because she intelligently mixed that genre with the others to form a special blend of style and sound all her own. “When I Get Home,” the lead off track is the obvious track for a single. There are a few songs on the CD that would be a good choice, however in my opinion, if you were to work a single to break your way into the charts this would be the one. The end of the CD sneaks in a bonus acoustic version of “Live the Lie,” which gives a stunning representation of her vocal prowess. This excellent album is a shoe in for a cross over success into the areas the pop, jazz and soul dominions. Although the R & B is the foundation from which she builds her musical house, there are many floors to explore, and you can take the stairs or the elevator, your choice. When this CD was over, I was floating on the clouds, and transportation was not necessary to reach the level I wanted to be on...you catch my drift?

"Smother.Net"

Packaged together neatly in a nicely tucked “Special Invitation” folder, one would almost be surprised to find what’s in store inside. What we have here is a delectable array of R&B and smooth jazz numbers. Tanya Fermin’s voice is able to conjure up the legends of Aretha Franklin and Anita Baker seemingly without effort. It should be no surprise then that her voice has found her trophy case filled with regional awards with the apex of New York State School Music Association’s award. Smooth as chocolate and absolute liquid transitions from R&B to jazz to soul. Not a sound typically associated with Northern California, Fermin’s “Special Invitation” is one to grasp onto especially if you’re lucky enough to get an invitation to her “invitation only” CD release party! - J-Sin

Again and again you will find some female talents in the USA who remained undiscovered until now. One of those singers is Tanya Fermin
and like her surname says, her album is very feminine. That does not
mean that she only sings about love and heartache, but she says about
her songs: I sing about heartache, happiness and hope. She is quite
right and you hardly have to add anything else. For her debut album
she worked with producer Myron Edwins who produced a mixture of jazz,
pop and R&B. Here and there he also added other elements like Reggae
and Blue. You will like to listen to the calmer songs in particular,
because she has a nice deep voice. You never need to turn the music
down.
The songs have a nice length. You can hear the following instruments: sax, guitar, trumpet, piano, contrabass, keyboard, flutes and so on.
It contains everything what a good musician requires. And she has a
lot of it. The only disturbing thing sometimes is the blend of the
drums, because it sounds very electrically. The faster songs are very
good as well, but she should stay with the more quite and cuddly
songs. There are no features and you can fully enjoy Tanya Fermin. Music lovers who like sophisticated music should check out her website. When she started at a church choir, she never thought to hold
her own album in hands. The dream became true. You should check it out
and listen to her songs. It is worth it.

Although she’s billed as “the next sound in jazz and R&B” and “a true jazz songstress,” the balance on Tanya Fermin’s debut CD, Special Invitation, is definitely tilted toward the R&B side of the equation. The R&B style she favors features the kind of old school soul groove that’s frequently favored by ‘smooth’ jazz stations, so that may be the focus of her jazz aspirations. On the other hand, she has real straight ahead chops, evident in her overall vocal phrasing and front and center on the bluesy “Tea For Two,” performed with a piano trio backing that sets it apart from the more heavily produced urban sound that dominates the rest of the 12 track disc.

Whatever style she chooses, though, she brings an impressive talent to bear on every track. She has a formidable range, although I tend to prefer the tracks that exploit the bottom end, and she performs with great emotional expression. She’s variously steamy, exultant and confiding in tone, always giving the sense that she’s singing to you, personally. The church choir experiences that provided her early musical proving ground is evident, too, in the exuberance of her performance.

Standout tracks for my ear include the title cut, the afore mentioned “Tea For Two” and the album opener, “When I Get Home,” but there’s nothing here I wouldn’t be pleased to hear again and again. With her rich vocal palette and the ability to cross genres freely, she’s ready for airplay success, but with this album available, there’s no reason to wait for your local station to catch on.
