"Nuskull's comment on EP, Tarantism"

"Tarantism is a deadly venenation due to the italian folk beliefs, which caused by one of the wolf-spiders subgenera's bite, by the "tarantula" (Lycosa tarentula).
This sickness was very common in South-Italy in the XVI. and XVII. centuries. In these times the doctors beleived, that there is no organic cause for the heightened excitability and restlessness that gripped the victims.
The accepted theraphy was the following: the only way how the diseased could fight against the venom was the frenzied dancing until depletion. This dance was named later Tarantella.
Since then it was diagnosed that the deadly venom originated from the European or Mediterranean black widow; whilst it is a tiny spider, so it remained unnoticed in that time of Italy."

/Wikipedia/

In spite of this the owners of the name are not italians, but it containes the same paradoxon as the folk beliefs long ago...
The band, which came from the iranian underground music scene counts four members, and they play in an elusive style.
However they and the articles of them speaks of death metal, but that is not so obvious on the 25 minutes long mixed stuff.
So the conventions given by the distance change much per country, especially if the young quartet streams it on us from a place, which is not known by its heavy and any other metal culture.

In their music not just in the solutions and in the melodies, but also in the sounding there is a confident floating variety, which of course eventuate itself, whilst the self-titled EP contains the collection of songs recorded in the studio and some other homemade demo tracks, which they recorded in the last years, so there is some kind of chronology, of course it is mixed.
Standing Alone is a strong lead-off, it can easily remind you of the 80's heavy, thrash and speed line, even so the vocal is much more mature, more mystical rattle, which is supported by good intimate solos, which changes into acoustical, and then it flows into a post-modern epic flavour, from here it becomes again heavy and thrash styled sinking stepping, it is again goodly constructed whit one-after-another-step building-up solos. Then the epical and acoustical tunes returns whit minimal folk-like components in its deepness and the song ends... what is this, if not a rough infection and skipping from one extreme to the other, at the same time it is also important to tell, that for first time it is interesting/disturbing, but this phenomenon can become easily familiar.
This track is followed by Monumental Madness, which starts whit a beautiful and mysterious garnish its strong rising, whit the joining thrash-like staccato; it shows, that the distant and tiny band has a good musical knowledge and conception... here the bass is much more dynamically strains and the vocal also become more brutal, musically it contains a minimal ancient-black influence, whit a little old rusty thrash metal; such names came to my mind like the early Celetic Frost or the Infernl Mjesty. At the end it flows into a slowly grinding --------- , then after some drum playing it intensively ends.
Since Horny Society is a demo track, so thus a new sounding and a slightly new musical world unfold itself. In some degree it follows the way trampled by Monumental Madness, but it works whit much more effects, the sounding creates a noisily full heavy-rock impression. They operate whit "constructing" mystical parts, a partly melodic and easy, but strong ---- sprawls onto it whit distorted vocal and whit the joining rolling bass. From 3:40 at the end thanks to a weird change they start to play raspy oldschool thrash death.
I have to remark that the oldschool and simple thrash-death themes mixing whit the melodic solos, and whit the somehow modern primitive heavy flavours are typical of the whole stuff.
Due to this continues Emptyness whit good breaks, the vocal is strongly distorted and multiple, but the music doesn't become more brutal, it's only stepping on the past influences, whit a smashing acoustical-bass shutdown, which is followed by a heavy-power-like melodic riff and a slightly heavy singing, plus at the end a change whit many solos...
I couldn't do anything whit the last track, Shokolat is a fucked up thing, well it sounds strange that they sing in their native language, which gains a folk impression. There's no problem whit the vocal, but it goes to pieces and it's uncreative, it fragments into the nothing, so it's a diddling track... it again has a new sounding, but the end of it is unlistenably bad! According to their webpage this is their newest recording, and i only hope that they won't continue whit this direction in the future!

That the album is interesting can be realised by first listening, but how far they will take whit this? And is it a need for a band, who rehabitate oldschool themes? Hard question, in their scene they are adequatly known and the ability is in them, the future will decide, well i inquisitively wait, - Nuskull

"Review on debut EP, Tarantism, by Nassir from Zirzamin.se"

Heavy metal

Tarantist is an underground band from Iran. Their music has a strong flavour of heavy metal but I am not sure I should call their sound Heavy or Death metal. They are on their way to find the originality in their sound that reminds me of Punk/ rock genre and after their performance in the Iranian intergalactic music festival in Holland, with that brilliant theatrical live performance's with those shocking acts and attitude on the stage, they made me think of "Red Hot Chilli Pepper".
How ever their self titled EP album named "Tarantist" is a collection of complete studio recorded tracks and some home made demos that Tarantist has recorded through these last years, which suggests this band is developing from an amateur band to a very original and up to date band that adds a big question mark in front of our popular cultural and it's values!.
The track called "Shokolat" is a proof of it.
This album may not be a great album but it is definitely a strong and big step for Tarantist to become a great band and after their performance in Holland, I can easily say that I believe in them.

Rock on guys!

"TarantisT in interview with Zirzamin.se about Anty-Jelf-Movement"

All about the Tarantist's "Anti Jelf Movement"!

Z.Z: Tarantist!!! Is Tarantist really a Death metal band? Why do I ask such a question?! I don't see you guys as an aggressive and dark minded angry musicians, your music is definitely angry and it is obvious that you are tired of our Iranian ways of living and want to revolt against it. The new version of the Pop track Shokolat shows it all, but if we put a side that Death metal thing, what is it that you guys are doing really?

Tarantist: Well, actually our music is feedback of our feelings. If you consider it as a Black Metal so that's what it is. If somebody call it Death Metal or Thrash Metal, again, so it is. The style of us depends on how somebody feels our sounds, as Sir Prozak [www.anus.com] called "Momental Madness" as a Phrasal Death Metal and etc. But let's forget about the "Style" which is just a word. What has an importance is what is being done. Does the job have something new? Is one really him/herself or just pretending and mocking a favorite character who is in his/her mind?! Does the character of a person, whom we get used to see him/her many times on our screens, supplies us something to say OR our feelings, our damaged brain, our thoughts and our Worm Within does it?! The answer is the Style. However our style is "Gorkh Metal" and here, we officially, introduce this new sub-genre of metal; Gorkh Metal !!

Z.Z: What is that? Gorkh Metal?!

Gorkh: [gorx],(adj): horrible;e.g. your face is Gorkh.
Gorkh (as verb): horrify; e.g. i gorkhed when i saw your face, or, I gorkhed when i heard your music.

Z.Z: Well that's interesting!.
You guys have started the so called "Anti Jelf Movement" what is it all about?!

Most of the new generation are really tired of obvious stupidity which is known as an Iranian Music and Art these days! Most of the L.A music is Shame these days, either nearly all of the established ones. Music became a Fashion today. It means, being a Singer, playing Guitar, having an Album and a Video Clip is one of the basics of being a high-class person.... Why nobody is in his/her own place?... These public idiocies made the feelings annoyed, disturbed and dirty while, someone may not consider our character as our music.

Then along the main jobs, "Anti Jelf Movement" [AJM] Started to work and Shokolat was the first release[Early 2006] and after a year, next track, Anti Benjamin Medly, which has been released a couple of days ago[2007], is the hottest and newest action.

Z.Z: I see that Tarantist have released an underground album. Tell us about the album.

Tarantist: Debut EP got released during our first overseas concert in Amsterdam, Holland. It contains 5 tracks which are mostly demo. Here are the order of tracks: Standing Alone, Momental Madness, Horny Society, Emptiness and Shokolat. [Actually Shokolat is not an album track but in the first release, it was]. CD is available in Europe, North America and iTunes digital music store.

Z.Z: How can we get a hold on a copy of it?

Tarantist: To order the cd, you can email to tarantists@tarantists.com

Z.Z: Will there be a second album by Tarantist in the future?

Tarantist: Definitely, Second, third, fourth and..., why not?

Z.Z: How will it sound then?

Tarantist: Nobody knows about the future but whatever it sounds, will sound like Tarantist.

Z.Z: Tarantist was one of the bands in the Intergalactic music festival in Holland. How did you guys felt up there on the real stage for the first time?

Tarantist: First step of Challenge was in undergrounds during past years. Second was Live Death III overseas; Amsterdam. And now we are in the Third round....Live in Amsterdam was a valuable outcome after a couple of years suffering and living under grounds!

Z.Z: What are the plans for the future?

Tarantist: Plans...Music, music and music. Rock the world, Fuck the World.

Z.Z: Could you give us some names of the Iranian musicians or bands in Iran that you think they are worthy our attention?

Tarantist: Actually and Fortunately zirzamin.se covers most of the worthy bands and musicians, however we would like to restate Farzad Golpayegani, Hypernova and 127.

Z.Z: And your last words?!!!

Tarantist: Special Real Thanks to Nassir, Behzad Bolour , Mani & Sholeh and Saeid G. [sound-engineer].
P.S. Momental Madness made Tarantist known in non-Iranian market, so did Shokolat in Iranian market!!! What a terrible difference!!

"Review on EP, Tarantism, by Salar Mahfoozi in Zirzamin.se"

A week and a few days ago I received an E-mail from Nassir, the head and the brains behind Zirzamin.se to write down a review for an underground Death Metal band in Iran. Talk about major slacking off, I did an appraisal for the band "Ahoora" months ago; after that I really didn't plan to write any assessments. After a plethora of months I finally got the E-mail, giving me an opinion to evaluate a band named "Tarantist", but is Tarantist a worthy enough band to compete with the army of Metal bands breaking new grounds in Iran? With bands such as "Ahoora" "Arthimoth" "SDS" "Schizoid man" and many more, will they be able to offer something new? Read to find out!

I tried very hard to dig up the bands new EP album, but I wasn't able to.
Due to the fact that in Iran everything is a bit well you know what "F%^*ed Up" I decided to send an E-mail to the band so I could somehow just snatch up that EP, but things didn't work out the way I expected. I got an E-mail from Arash Rahbari (a member of the band ) explaining that I should download the tracks from the bands official site,
though most of the tracks were demo versions and weren't full versions, by hook or by crook I decided to write a review for this band. This review is more of like a preview than a review because I'm judging the band by a few demo songs and two full versions songs, which I downloaded from their official site. Changes will be made to this review and it will be updated when I actually receive the full version of all the songs; so I must state that I'm refereeing this band by a mere of demo songs and pretty much what I said earlier. After all, I think this band does need an analysis for now to know in which level they are.

The band has a new EP named "Tarantism" plus an eccentric pair of songs named the "Anti-Javad Movment".

I decided to eavesdrop to the "Anti Javad Movement" because it caught my eyes right away and I was curious of it. The first song I listened to was "Shokolat", which is the imitation of the pop song sung by Googooshes son (I don't know his name and I don't even bother too!).
It starts out with a dangly rhythm reminding you of mainstream pop music; as the song proceeds the cavernous vocals hit the track and I must say it sounds really funny, it also has a short verbal communication in the middle of the song which is once again witty and comical, it ends out with a so-so solo and then after repeating the chorus, the song ends.
My interpretation is somehow two sided. Yes I know it was funny but something just wasn't right. Insulting or imitating someone else's song is immature and naive, and in the metal scene, I've never seen a band directly offense a band or singer in a direct way; metal is more than this, it's not about making fun of some pop singer, it can cover millions of more important subjects. I know, pop music is dim in my opinion, but the band could have criticized instead of flaming, speaking about their opinions in a more general way about pop music instead of aiming on one person; something that the band "Tool" did with the song "Aenima". Lastly this song has more of a "Kick" in to it, what I mean is that you only might listen to it for joking around and just laughing your head off instead of actually listening to the song deeply and try to achieve a message.

The next song was the "Anti Benjamin Medley". This song was even more hilarious than the previous one, it starts out with clean vocals and vibrating clean effects, which reminds me of an old man. Suddenly the song changes the transmission in to a more blasting, steady paced rhythm topped of with blasting vocals.
As the slider moves on to 01:29 the song once again changes to whimpering soft vocals with a heavy rhythm similar to the first part of the song. The song also has many lavatorial references, which is comical.
After that we enter what I call the "Anonymous impish sounds", it reminds me of System of a Down, it's like entering a jungle loaded with baboons. The song ends with a fart and pretty much the case is closed. Like I said earlier it was once again immature and lacking seriousness. The band could have made a more serious boundary of lyrics instead of just copying someone's song and just slighting them, they should take the matter in a more serious way.

My Final thoughts on this EP

Cons: Naive, Immature, kiddy.
Pros: entertaining.

The next set of songs was the Demo songs, which was better compared to the "Anti Javad Movement". It showed more significance but it had a few errors.

The first song I started off with was "Horny Society", the reason I decided to listen to this song was very obvious because I live in a horny society and I wanted to observe this song and find out what it had to state about this fact. The vocals weren't implemented that well and it was loaded with exaggeration, the back vocals were just spare and they didn't needed to be put into action. However as the song moves on, it starts to - Salar Mahfoozi- Zirzamin

Bio

TarantisT - Toxxxic uncontrolled impulsive dance mania caused by the bite of  Tarantula. Also known as Tarantism.

TarantisT was formed in 2000 in Tehran, IRAN by a group of young underground metal heads and moved to Los Angeles, CA in 2008.

TarantisT started playing alternative rock and heavy metal music in the
basements of Tehran, secretly and quietly, but LOUD. Putting on secret,
underground shows and through word of mouth, the band obtained
international attention. International media correspondents (including,
but not limited to; BBC, NHK, SKY, CNN, NPR, SAT 1, Metal Hammer,
Kerrang) started visiting Tehran to meet and talk with TarantisT. Soon
news reports and posts began to aid TarantisT with international
expansion. Following that, TarantisT was invited to play their music in
European and North American festivals, such as; SXSW, CMJ, NXNE,
Canadian Music Week, and Intergalactic Fest, to name a few. TarantisT
played with familiar bands; Metallica, Motรถrhead, Stone Temple Pilots,
Muse, Cheap Trick, Voivod, Sum 41, My Ruin, Ben Harper, and many more.

TarantisT released their self titled EP in 2006, Tarantism in 2008,
Distorted Brains in 2010, "Say Hail" single in 2010, and the single "For
Me The Bells Toll" in 2011, which has been featured and published by
the SXSW festival
