Bio

Tarrey Torae -The name, is catchy, isn't it? The way her name smoothly rolls off the tongue. The way the native Chicagoan's voice belts out round after round of ear candy is no different. Tarrey's melodic, mellow and emotive style of contemporary R&B, puts on no false pretenses. *

Hear it? It's the crossroads between rejuvenated soul and the music of old - Tarrey reinvigorates contemporary R&B with a sound that is both neo- and retro-, progressive and retrospective. *

'My music is just me. It's soul…' says Tarrey. Influenced by Patti LaBelle, Earth, Wind & Fire, Roberta Flack, Angela Winbush, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, Frankie Beverly & Maze, Teena Marie, Marvin Gaye, Rachelle Ferrell and 'all the … greats,' Torae brings a vintage candor infused with modern sensibilities to soul music.

Where it all started? Although, Tarrey has been singing all her life, her professional endeavors began in the magical year of 1999. In this self-defining year, she moved from performing at Rituals Night Club in Chicago, to becoming the front woman for SoulFedd, the Windy City's most popular R&B band. Later that same year, this vocal powerhouse won first place in the Chicago Annual City-Wide Talent Expo, which spawned a series of performances, including the National NAACP Hip-Hop Tour (55 cities) and the Nissan/Essence Magazine 'Electric Moyo' Music Mix Tour. Later she earned a spot as a 4X Winner in the New York City Amateur Night at The Apollo Competition.

Singer & Songwriter - These early successes led Tarrey from her native Chicago, IL to Nashville, TN and then to New York, NY. There she began nurturing her own muse by writing her own songs and recording demos for producers and contributing to music projects for Kanye West (Rockafella Records), the legendary Last Poets (Motown Records), J. Ivy (HBO's Def Poetry Jam), & John Legend (Columbia Records).

On the Move - Tarrey has performed in the same shows as some of her well-respected progenitors. From the consciousness of Roy Ayers, Gil Scott-Heron and Jill Scott to the gospel-inflections of Be Be Winans, from the acoustic soul of India Arie and the contemporary rhythm and blues of Chante Moore, Jon B and fellow Chicagoan Syleena Johnson. She has also share Stage Bills with Usher, Common, Anthony Hamilton, Nas, Talib Kweli, Faith Evans, El & Chico Debarge, Patti LaBelle, Floetry, Lyfe, Amel Larrieux, The Roots & Erykah Badu.

As of date, Tarrey has written for & featured on Oprah Winphrey's favorite single titled 'Live it Up' - on the platinum debut album for Columbia Record's John Legend, & Rockafella Recording's Freeway (Hear The Song) & Grammy Award Winning Kanye West (Family Business).

Currently, Tarrey is working on a new album "The Sweetest Survivor" set to be replaced October 22, 2010.
