Bio

Taurus is a new band whose members are not new to the music world. With many years of combined experience as side men with Ben Kweller, Mason Jennings, Rosanne Cash, Andrew Bird, Tim Easton, Haley Bonar and others, Taurus is based on the bonds forged as bandmates with these groups, but the parallels become harder to draw beyond that. They take less from the Americana roots that unite the aforementioned songwriters and more from alternative rock and the more energetic "indie" music. Their comfort in both worlds reflects the breadth of musicality in the group and highlights an appreciation for traditional song craft combined with a love for the darker and more abstract sounds of their own common influences.

With no room for a piano in his Brooklyn apartment, bassist/singer Chris Morrissey "borrowed" guitarist and roommate Rich Hinman's accoustic guitar in January of 2010. No stranger to composing, Chris has a critically acclaimed jazz album out on Sunnyside Records, but as his composers tool had to stay behind in Minnesota, he turned to a less familiar instrument. Four months later with more than a record's worth of material the band began rehearsing under the sign for which it was named. Picking the team based on history over geography Chris asked Rich (he did lend him his guitar after all) and another long-time Kweller bandmate Mark Stepro of Los Angeles to join the band. High-school best friend and Mason Jennings/Haley Bonar band mate Jake Hanson of Minneapolis joined the group in New York for a week of rehearsals and shows. In June, the band traveled to rural southern Minnesota and completed the basic tracking for their forthcoming album, "Cannon Falls" engineered by the great Brent Sigmeth.
Taurus makes music with an interest in the possibilities of music alone. They play their songs from the gut, and play them well, and believe if that is the engine that drives them, people will like what they hear.
