"DAY and a DREAM MUSIC, REVIEWS, & CULTURE: ...TAWN P: TKE WAKE UP KISS MIXTAPE"

With her dreadlocks swinging back and forth, Tawn P can easily be considered the pint sized version of a Tasmanian devil while on a microphone. We’ve seen her in person and came away thoroughly impressed, even spotlighted her with a small sampler to give people an idea of who she was and what she brought to the table.
Then her feature on Dante Higgins’ “Lauryn Hill Stickup” occurred. In all honesty, there hasn’t been a feature on one song in Houston in the past year that immediately told me, “I need to check for this with the absolute quickness.” However, plenty of quality does lie on Tawn’s first official mixtape, mixed by The DJ Don (producer of Pro’s World from Propain’s Depature)

Houston has a female emcee hub that has gone largely unnoticed, time to wake them up. - BRANDO CALDWELL,

?"Now I don't mean to be so blunt with it, but after I do this you gon' say a cunt did it." -Tawn-P

The most critical plot point overshadowed by the fact that the New Houston Collective has been gaining strength by the minute is that, seemingly overnight, there is a whole host of female rappers making music that does not make you want take a nap on 59 South.
Namely, it's Tawn-P, UZOY (like the gun), TroubleSum, Candi Redd, Just Brittany and the Gutta Mamis. What happened to Perseph? Is she still alive? Did she go back to her home planet? Come back, Perseph. - Shea Serrano

"The Wake Up Kiss (self-released, 2011): ...It feels a bit like Tawn P, a teeny-tiny firecracker MC with an affinity for dreadlocks and short pants, materialized out of thin air. One day she didn't exist, the next day she did, like an inverse of the thesis statement in UGK's "One Day": Tawn-P this, Tawn-P that, Tawn-P something, something baseball bat...But then she released The Wake Up Kiss. And watch the fuck out. Tawn's scratchy, brassy voice is instantly entertaining - it sounds like it's been dragged back and forth through TV static - and she wields it like an axe murderer for a large percentage of TWUK. On it, she's aggressive and boisterous and confrontational and occasionally insightful and perpetually energetic, slowing down only to breathe and blink every ten or so minutes...the latter of which she accidentally sings on - but it is a fun, purposeful 40 minutes and has to be regarded as one of the three most impressive Houston rap outings thus far this year..." - Shea Serrano

"Day and a Dream: Music, Reviews, & Culture: Tawn P – Emergency (f. Mr. Wired U"

Am I hearing things or is Tawn P breaking out of her “I’ll use the estrogen in my body to completely serve any male rapper on a track” mode? Her redux of Kelly Rowland‘s “Motivation” features Tawn utilizing those sultry vocals of hers while Mr. Wired Up slowly begins hsi ascent towards the consciousness. In fact, it works exactly in the same vein as Kelly & Weezy as Tawn adds seductive R&B singer to her already expanding resume including “female with so many tattoos but I bet you’d still hit”.

11:09 p.m.: Son. Of. A. Bitch. We've been trying to see Tawn P live for, like, two months and have missed her every single time. She apparently just finished her set a couple of minutes ago. This shit is unbelievable. Go ahead and add this to the Big List of Reasons To Hate LeBron James that people have been compiling.

Tawn P is the creator of The Wake Up, one of the year's very best tapes. - Shea Serrano

"A Day & A Dream"

Tawn P has been called numerous things through these keystrokes. Firecracker, supremely talented, name the superlative about a female emcee & you’ve read it. As ambitious as the PA to HTX native is, the idea of her tackling five songs from Watch The Throne in a form of statement is going to catch a few eyes as well as ears.

At times, Heir To The Throne is quite militaristic. Tawn adapts quickly to the plateau set before her, opening up about black on black crime, her sexuality as well as passionate bars about change and making a difference. True, it’s the sort of fanfare you may hear from any female emcee wanting to place her teeth on the threshold of success but the added gospel backing Frank Ocean‘s vocals on “On Deaf Ears” show that nothing may possibly hurt the wild child. Not even herself at this point. - Brando Caldwell

"Day and a Dream: Music, Reviews, & Culture: EP: Tawn P – The Sampler"

It’s not often you get someone who resembles the female version of Lil Wayne and could double as a tatted up R&B singer but when taking a glance at Tawn P, you’d have to do a double take. She’s not physically imposing at all but the moment she grabs a microphone, she’s similar to the Tasmanian Devil – all energy and emotion.

After watching her burn stages from One Mic to Best Rapper In Texas, we got our hands on a solid 5 track sampler of everything the little woman with dreds can do. She can be sensual, she can be bold & cocky but in the end she’s all human. Not to mention she could possibly beat your favorite male emcee in a battle if tested.

Including in Tawn P – The Sampler are “Gudda Gudda”, “Let’s Toast” & “Akkapella” featuring Davuntai. People keep saying that the state doesn’t produce seriously talented artists of the fairer sex. Well, here’s proof to debunk that statement - Brando Caldwell
