TEACH YOURSELF PIANO: "Sweet Waltz, Bitter Waltz" (TYP Recordings)

Clever yet modest, the Windsor sister-brother duo Teach Yourself Piano has been entertaining a faithful clutch in its hometown since 1995 with cabaret-style original songs. The debut by Sarah and Kevin Atkinson is much more of a family affair as younger sister, Anna, helps out on violin and vocals, while other Atkinsons provided some of the artwork.

TYP enlisted a Canadian folk legend in David Essig to handle the studio controls and some guitar, which will give the project a cachet outside Windsor.

The sometimes acidic quality of Sarah's lyrics undercuts the sweetness of Kevin's melodies -- the CD's title perfectly describes the content.

The two waltzes at the core illustrate the point -- "Rolling Pin Waltz (Wives)" is a wife's lament about her wayward spouse cast in a bouncy arrangement; the instumental "E Minor Waltz" is a slow and sombre tune, featuring the string accompaniment of Sarah and their younger sister, Anna.

The rest incorporates gospel ("The Preacher"), blues ("Iced Coffee Man"), jazz, traditional folk, Kurt Weill-style social commentary, Cole Porter playfulness, and a dash of Randy Newman irony.

"CD Review by Michael Panontin"

Windsor siblings Kevin and Sarah Atkinson are Teach Yourself Piano (he the tunesmith, she the wordsmith) and this self-released CD Sweet Waltz, Bitter Waltz follows a decade or so of café/bookstore slogging around that border city. Sweet Waltz…- coolly packaged with each song bedecked with accompanying artwork by local artists - skirts such diverse genres as cabaret, folk, blues and classical art song. Think Kurt Weill meets Paolo Conte meets Nellie McKay.

Steeping itself in the same sort of wit and whimsy that made Ms. McKay’s Get Away from Me (2004) so surprisingly compelling, the disc is anchored by pianist Kevin’s deftly emotive songwriting and then buoyed by sister Sarah’s robust and throaty vocals. To this add bass, strings (these by younger sister Anna, thus completing the family affair), and folk icon David Essig’s occasional slide guitar.

‘Rolling Pin Waltz’ is a rollicking number with Kevin’s vibrant piano showcasing Sarah’s acerbic wit – at times humorously so – (“I believed your sorry ass and then you broke my heart. Now you sleep till two…”). ‘And the Dream of a Day (Labour Song)’ has more of a forties communist bent – indeed, it was written for May Day celebrations in Windsor –and, lyrically at least, recalls Susana Baca’s ‘Maria Llando’ or even Martha and the Muffins’ ‘Echo Beach’, all empathy-laden pleas for the quietly desperate pencil-pusher. The weepy strings of "E Minor Waltz", the lone instrumental here, evoke - oddly in that it is a waltz, not a tango - Astor Piazzolla (via Gidon Kremer, that is).

Sweet Waltz, Bitter Waltz is a confident and refined debut. (Though, the irony of that gritty factory town begetting such lush beauty is hardly lost on this proud Windsor ex-pat.)

Bio

Sibling Songwriting Duo

Teach Yourself Piano [TYP] are
composer/pianist Kevin Atkinson and his
sister lyricist/vocalist Sarah Atkinson.
Performances also often include their sister
Anna on violin.

Writing and performing in their hometown of
Windsor, Ontario since 1995, TYP continue
to offer a fresh and exciting musical
experience for discerning music lovers.

The Atkinsons grew up in a musical
household with a mother who loves to sing
and a folk singer father who is rumoured to
have known over 500 songs.

TYP’s compositions are influenced by
Broadway musicals, as well as folk, classical
and jazz genres. “We were weaned on Pete
Seeger, Tom Lehrer, Rodgers &
Hammerstein, and CBC Stereo. Our patron
saints are Kurt Weill and Randy Newman,”
says Sarah.

Both siblings played with various other
musical groups before teaming up together.
Kevin played flute in Windsor Celtic band
Sawney Beane; Sarah was a founding
member of Vancouver worldbeat group
Ngoma.

Kevin has an uncanny ability for writing
infectious melodies that are informed by
classical training and a love for the tin-pan
alley classics of American popular music.

Sarah’s intelligent lyrics are matched by a
voice that ranges from smoky and subtle to
soaring and radiant.
