Bio

Guitarist/producer Teddy Kumpel and drummer Matt Miller, a.k.a. Mister Shifty, have been jamming together since they were 15 years old and their visceral musical connection is only amplified by Frank Scavone's rock solid bass. After many years ‘behind the scenes’ these master musicians are stepping front and center with their unique contribution to the vibrant jam band scene.

Despite what their multi layered sound might tell you, everything you hear from Mister Shifty on record and stage is played live. With innovative use of looping technology and their vast experience mangling vintage sounds Mister Shifty effortlessly create myriad textures that make you think there must be a whole slew of musicians hiding backstage. A veritable funkdafied psychadelic orchestra posing as a rock trio!

Mister Shifty's fearless leader Teddy Kumpel has been a sought after guitar slinger for artists including Rickie Lee Jones, Marshall Crenshaw and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors as well as a respected producer in NY’s fertile indie rock scene. Now he is ready to return to an earlier pursuit, improvised music with deep pocket and no artificial boundaries. "I've been a songwriter for EMI and a sideman for Nine Inch Nails but before that I led an instrumental funk band called "Nome Sane?" with Tony Scherr on bass and Andy Middleton on saxophone. I feel a return to that music now but in a new form: as a power trio with occasional special guests. I can't wait to do a gig with Mister Shifty and have a buddy like Steven Bernstein or John Medeski sit in"

Collectively Mister Shifty members have jammed with artists as diverse as David Grisman, Tower of Power, Billy Martin, Sex Mob, The Zen Tricksters, Blake Tartare, Toots Hibbert, Frankie Paul, Clark Gayton, Blood Sweat and Tears and India Arie among many others.
