The best progressive-rock bands draw from various sources, careful not merely to mimic the successes of their predecessors. Local trio Ted Eddison does a brilliant job of combining disparate influences and ejecting them as original concepts, while maintaining structural and sonic connections to musical masters Pink Floyd and Rush.
During their March 25 concert at the Half Penny Pub, 321 W. Fayette St., the triumvirate showed off some tunes they've been working on since the release of their 2005 debut LP This Whole Idea Anyway (independent CK). "Rubber World," available for download on their Web site, streams with crystal-clear punctuation of guitar notes that echo against drummer Coyote Thrust's sporadic attack of toms and snare underneath. The song alternates from heavy groove to serious and obscure melancholy, both sides of which the band employs consistently.
Ted Eddison also gave a surprise rendition of "YYZ" by Rush. Flavors from that group and prog-rock forefathers King Crimson often show up in the threesome's sets; odd time signatures and electronics flourishes add a bewitching layer to the mix. Their deployment of processors, pedals and an acoustic/electric drum set allows the group to achieve epic levels in output, even more impressive considering they're a three-piece.
For the original composition "Convulsions," Joe Bell allowed his bass to hang limp as he fiddled with the knobs on his Moog synthesizer, while running his fingers up and down the board. The resulting solo resembled a Pink Floyd-ian passage from their mid- to late-1970s portion of their career.
They also played "Where the Liar Sleeps Tonight," a song based on the nightmares of lead singer Tim Woods. One of their simpler tracks, it nonetheless typifies their ability to apply an accessible edge to their music. They identify more with the heavier elements for rock, but from time to time the guitar tone and funky rhythms put an almost jammy spin on their songs.
Both opening bands regularly play with Ted Eddison: Utica's Idol Hands and Rochester's BML produced commendable modern and prog-rock flavors, respectively. Syracuse band Ted Eddison rocks out for sure on it's latest disc, "This Whole Idea Anyway."
But it doesn't do the three- piece outfit justice to try and cram it into the label "rock band."
With Tim Wood on vocals and Coyote Thrust on drums and Jeff Jakubowski on bass, Eddison--- "Ted Eddison is a band" is the catchphrase sprinkled throughout the band's website to make sure nobody pulls a Pink Floyd and asks which one's Ted----can pour out their hearts like
and emo band, shoot off into space like a techno band and get all dreamy like a progressive rock band.
For sure you can find touches of jazz and jam in the 10 - song disc, too.
Emo fans will love the lead off cut, "Hard to Breathe." Jam fans will dig "Midgets Waltz." Fusion lovers can plug into "Emphysema Beat Box" And "The Deep Beneath"travels with satisfaction from suspenseful guitar to growling, hard rock.
Just released by the band is the single "Rubber World" Joe Bell jumps in on bass and moog, and there's more to the bands growth than a personnel change.
Wood's delivery dashes along the line toward hip-hop but never really leaves the land of progressive rock. It's like an innovative instruction manual on how
to cope with a really rough day.

A trio whose power and vision unite to provide a uniquely rewarding and challenging musical experience, Ted Eddison has intrigued fans since its inception. Ted's music blends characteristics of progressive, alternative rock and electronica, free-form psychedelia, and every once in a while will grab you with a disarming pop hook. Some fans have made comparisons to the vocal styles of Sting and Ozzy Ozzbourne, and the music of Yes, King Crimson, and Pink Floyd.
Although elements of the band were writing, playing, and performing since 1996, the group found its structure and power early in 2004. The accomplished musicians-Timothy Wood, Coyote Thrust, and Joe Bell-have put together a sound which is refreshing, unique, and innovative.
Their debut album "This Whole Idea Anyway......." was recorded at the legendary Studio A at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York in 2004. The session took place before they even made their first live appearance, coincidentally being the last artist to track in this historic room. Ted also had the opportunity to have this work mastered at the Grammy Award winning Classic Sound studios in Manhattan.
In the two years since, Ted Eddison has been perfecting their live set in the best clubs in the area, such as The Lost Horizon, The Mezzanotte Lounge (Syracuse N.Y.) The Bug Jar, Montage Live (Rochester N.Y.) The Continental, Mohawk Place (Buffalo N.Y.), The Haunt (Ithaca, NY), The Electric Co. (Utica, NY), Continental, Kenny's Castaways (NYC), the Trash Bar (Brooklyn), and The Maple Grove (Maple Heights, OH). Along the way, Ted has had opening slots for national acts such as Lake Trout and Between Home and Serenity.
Quickly distinguishing themselves from other bands of Central New York, Ted’s fan base grows stronger with every performance. Enhanced by the easy familiarity the musicians have with electronic technology, such as live samples and synthesizers, word has begun to spread of the incredible, intangible live show that Ted Eddison puts on.
In July of 2006 Ted entered the studio again, this time in the newly built Wood Media Studios in Queens, NY. Under the guidance and expertise of engineer/producer Don Wood, Ted laid down what is to be their sophomore effort -scheduled to be released by the end of 2006.
Ted Eddison will be touring consistently to support the SAMMY (Syracuse Area Music Award) nominated "This Whole Idea Anyway....." and their yet to be titled upcoming release, and to spread the word that music can be intelligent, thought provoking and last but not least accessible.
