TEIKA
The stronger the wind blows, the further away he casts those who are willingly uprooted. Austrian-born Mateja Kert was carried all the way to Dublin, Ireland, where she unresistingly got sucked up by the local alternative music scene. After ten years of co-writing, playing and touring with Irish underground heroes The Ultra Montanes, for whom she tickled the ivories and provided backing vocals, she has recently relocated back to her native Austria. In 2012 she started presenting her own material at solo gigs in Klagenfurt, Vienna and Ljubljana.
Her now raw, now fragile vocals are mirrored by clear, sometimes shouty, sometimes mournful melodies and subtle, multifaceted lyrics. This is powerful singing-songwriting, combining and interchanging the delicate, angry, forlorn and solemn. Simple chord progressions create the illusion of the familiar, deeply melodic songs are tweaked with just the right dose of the unpredictable. TEIKAs songs are said to contain reminders of song-writing grandes such as Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Conor Oberst, Kate Bush or David Bowie.
