"Tejas Brothers Inject New Life Into Classics At Gruene Hall"

There’s something to be said for entertainers that are able to capture the audience’s attention, but Perez stepped it up a notch, filling the venue with an energy so palatable that 60 year old men were shaking off the rust and dancing despite barely being able to walk. People went wild and couldn’t help but groove to the cool vibe emanating from the stage. “!@#$%& yeah.” - The 9513 Country Music

"Tommy Alverson's 10th Annual Family Gathering"

The Tejas Brothers played early Saturday afternoon when most of the crowd was still trying to sleep off all the Friday night partying, so the crowd started very small. But as their music started to fill the campground, the crowd grew and grew and soon everyone was dancing, cheering, and having a good ole time. The Tejas Brothers are very dynamic and fun to watch and they really seem to enjoy entertaining the crowd. They play some fantastic tunes that will get you out of your seat and dancing and you'll hate to see them finish their set. It's hard not to love their energy, stage presence, and spicy Tex Mex sound which "fuses Mexican polkas and folk music with 1950s style rock, doo wop, and blues". Don't miss the chance to see them playing the concert scene. Sorry about the pictures - they don't capture the enthusiasm and good nature of the Tejas Brothers - my photographer was too busy enjoying the band, dancing, and having fun and neglected to take a number of shots! - Guide to Texas Outside

"Tejas Brothers sparkle at McDavid Studio"

FORT WORTH — If our city ever designated an "official" band, the Tejas Brothers would have to get some votes, based on the band’s performance at McDavid Studio on Friday night.

Members of the locally based quartet, fronted by lead singer and accordion player Dave Perez, are not related. Rather, the players are related by their common roots in the musical genres that give Texas music its unique character.

Perez’s accordion is straight out of a border-town cantina. But his vocals, which include occasional shifts into Spanish, owe much more to pure American country-Western than to Mexican ranchera. And guitarist Lex Cochran’s razor-edged, angular licks are an equal blend of country, rock and blues.

The result is a distinctly Tex-Mex sound that reflects Cowtown like a mirror.

The early portion of the band’s Friday set list included originals, such as the jumping rocker I Can’t Sleep, and covers such as Buck Owens’ corn pone classic Act Naturally and the yearning Ray Charles hit You Don’t Know Me. But perhaps the most appropriate choice for a cover was She’s About a Mover, the signature hit of another artist who defined a certain Texas sound: Doug Sahm.

Perez’s squeezebox led the way on most numbers, but the tunes were varied enough in style to prevent sameness from setting in. And although Perez does not have an extensive vocal range, he can bring a burst of power to his tenor when needed.

On the whole, this band is something of a cultural shortcut. It gives you several of Texas’ various musical personalities in one pleasing package. - By PUNCH SHAW for Star-Telegram
