"TEMPERS X ARK CODEX SECRET SHOW"

Coming up fast on the recent cellphone shots taken at Bushmill’s party featuring Elijah Wood’s DJ sets, the main players of Sentimentalist set out for even more low-grade photos. Ahem. Tempers, a New York-via-London set with a smooth, gothy, S&M vibe, played Calamari Press‘ release of their latest art book, ARK CODEX. There was also a chance to pick up Chiara Barzini’s latest publication, Sister Stop Breathing.

The UK band & Rome-based publisher aside, you also couldn’t swing a cat without (welcomely) knocking over some Germans. As nearly the only attendees without heavy accents, we threw back plenty secret glasses of secret red wine and waited in secret for the secret red-lights to announce this very secret performance. There were so many more secrets that I can’t, as yet, even write!

Reminiscent of recent goth girl-boy duos like Tearist and White Ring, Tempers was markedly more calmed down, and stylishly less energetic. There was some added interaction between the two that could have taken place, but we shall see what unfolds, awaiting when our next opportunity to be heavily beaten by either of these gorgeous creatures might be. Editor-in-Chief, Madeline, noted the many red moods conveyed by guitarist Eddie Cooper during the set, reminding her of the sinewy-rich playing of Daniel Ash (Bauhaus/Tones on Tail).

I hope their tour dates come to fruition soon for a chance to check them out in a not-so-secret setting! - SENTIMENTALIST BLOG

"NYC ARTISTS ON THE RISE: TEMPERS"

From the ashes of her previous band “Seasick,” Eastern European chanteuse Jasmine Golestaneh has joined forces with fellow musician Eddie Cooper to form “Tempers.” Their song "Eyes Wide Wider" hit us immediately with a dissonant buzzing-bees guitar tone, not too dissimilar from what Sonic Youth has been known to do over the years. A steady drumbeat follows, providing solid grounding for the deeply reverberated male vocals riding ghostly over top, wihile underlying guitar textures underneath morph in unpredictable directions. "Manners" presents a more electronic pulse, with off-center guitar figures combining for a prime-era Sisters of Mercy vibe. This time Teutonic female vocals mesh with whip crack percussion, completing the leather-boot-lust scenario. Additional keyboard and guitar textures further enhance the multiple layers of vocal hooks. "Hell Hotline” pushes the electronics in even more ambitious directions, covering ground one might expect from Brian Eno or David Sylvian. Those ambient atmospheric are soon matched to a dance percussion pulse that more closely resembles the output of bands like Ladytron, or Client. There is a greater sense of mystery here, however - and perhaps a touch of danger. It all adds up to an intoxicating elixir. - Dave Cromwell - THE DELI MAGAZINE

Bio

Tempers are Jasmine Golestaneh and Eddie Cooper, a New York-based synth/goth/electro/rock duo. Their music inhabits a realm of opaque romance. Delphic vocals tower precariously over propulsive beats, and shimmering, static-like synths merge with guitars that swell and vanish.Their live performances are a portal into a red-lit shadow world, exploring the thin line between freedom and oblivion. Jasmine invokes a kind of Leonard Cohen muse, channeling a Blue Velvet dialectic of hypnotic abandonment and illuminated purpose. Beside her, Eddie is a dispassionate master of ceremonies, a sphinx-like solidity in the ether.
