Biography

The career of Teresa Cristina and Semente Group (Seed) started in 1998, when Teresa congregated the musicians Bernardo Dantas, Joao Callado, Pedro Miranda and Ricardo Cotrim with the objective to make a show in honor of Candeia (great composer of samba). The project didn't happened but in the same year, they had started to play in Lapa, Rio's most bohemian neighborhood, at Bar Semente that gave the name of the band who plays with Teresa. It worked out so well that soon Teresa Cristina and Grupo Semente were being called the "rescuers of Lapa's night life" that had been going down since the eighties. After becoming a hit band playing at Semente, Teresa and the guys went on to perform at other venues in Lapa, such as Carioca da Gema and Centro Cultural Carioca, for an ever growing audience. Media recognition came with the release of the first album, which was a double tribute to Brazilian idol Paulinho da Viola's 60th birthday called A msica de Paulinho da Viola. Because of that cd Teresa won a couple of awards such as "Premio Rival BR" and "Premio Tim" as "Best New Artist", and the album was nominated as "Best Samba Album" at the 2003 Latin Grammy.
In 2004, together with Mestre Trambique that replaced Ricardo Cotrim, who was leaving Semente, they recorded the band's second album "A Vida Me Fez Assim" ("Life has Made Me This Way"), which featured Teresa's premiere as a songwriter. They gathered an excess of overwhelming reviews, and sold-out tickets at theatres in which they performed. On that same year, the band hit the road with the "Projeto Pixinguinha" tour, performing at the main cities of the Northeast of Brazil.
The success of Teresa Cristina and Grupo Semente exceeded the Brazilian borders and took the legitimate samba to countries such as Japan and Germany (where they participated of Culture's Coup invited by Gilberto Gil).
In 2005, they performed at the "Brazilian Year" Celebrations in Paris, while recording their first live CD and DVD, suitably titled: "O Mundo e Meu Lugar" ("The World is My Place").
In 2007, they performed in Spain, Italy, The Netherlands, Indian and Mexico, invited by Itamaraty to make a concert during the president Lula's official visit, and Equator, invited by the Embassy of Brazil to celebrate the 185 years of Independence. On the same year, they released their first CD by EMI Music, Delicada ("Delicate"), an album with compositions of Teresa Cristina such as Cantar ("To sing") and Delicada ("Delicate"), a partnership with Z Renato who also gave name to the record, beyond thererecording of classics, such as "Gema", of Caetano Veloso. The CD had great prominence in the national press and recently was released in Mexico, reaching 14th place in "World Music and Crossover".
