Thanks for stopping in! Detroit-born and raised Terese Carlton was singing and performing from the day she could talk. Between her parent's deep love and passion for music and her older brother's rich, diverse record collection, Terese was exposed to many genres of music early on. She began writing songs on the piano at the tender age of ten years old, and then picked up her mother's guitar in her thirteenth year. Folks were amazed at her lyrics, which belied her young age and seemed to embody all of the emotion and gravity of those tumultuous teenage years. She has been writing ever since. After playing to an enthusiastic crowd who turned out to see the annual free country music festival in Detroit's Hart Plaza, Terese re-located to Nashville, Tennessee. Thirteen years in Nashville fined-tuned this gift, and she spent much of her time there learning the art of song craft, pitching songs to recording artists who were already established, and performing with some of the finest musicians Nashville had to offer. She appeared on Country Music Televison now and again, and regularly played the legendary Bluebird Cafe as well as numerous clubs in the city, showcasing her songs that she billed as "music for passionate people". Terese landed a weekly gig, which she played for a year's time, and spent much of it writing and developing what would later become the material for her first CD release, UNDISCIPLINED FURY...
During this time she met J Gary Smith, a music-row producer and former artist himself, while waiting tables (now there's a suprise in Nashville!) one night. Terese recorded several demo's with Gary at Malloy Boy's Studio/Productions, which he promptly began marching up and down Music Row in the hopes of landing a deal with a label. Her voice and gift for songwriting attracted the attention of a very enthusiastic Steve Williams, her co-manager, and he arranged a showcase with an independent label, Rising Storm records. The label's owner, Bill Richardson, had been successful in launching the career of Ed Roland, the creative force behind the group Collective Soul, and looked forward to repeating the process again with a new artist. They teamed up with producer/engineer Kevin Beamish, who had worked with artists such as Stevie Wonder, and REO Speedwagon. He would later work with country blockbuster Kenny Chesney.
Terese's first CD, UNDISCIPLINED FURY, was released in 1996, with great reviews from some of the industry's top music publications. The first single, A WOMAN LIKE ME, enjoyed two and a half weeks in the 1 slot at WTPA in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and received airplay on over 50 radio stations accross the country. Her second release, Right As Rain, features the song STARLIGHT MOTEL, which Terese is currently working on turning into a film. Both CD's are available on CD Baby and Amazon, as well as many other internet sites.
Terese is looking forward to recording her third CD, BELIEVE, in 2007-2008 and to seeing you! She is currently playing a weekly solo gig in Portland, Oregon...
