Bio

In most cases, African music is simply the expression of life through sounds in wich the musician beyond imitating the sounds of nature, using natural musical instruments, also reverses this process using the sounds of nature in its music.

This is TerraKota's motive; they use African traditional and popular harmonies and rhythms, playing various instruments from all over the world, further to the usual Western instruments such as bass, guitar and drums. They perform a careful fusion in which every new sound has its space in the web under which the themes develop. In a time in which the majority of the western modern music variants seems to head to a dead end, many Western musicians are turning to new features from all over the world.

They aim to create fresh sounds and give to their music the soul it lacks to find in the Western world in which a single human brain in front of a mega computer produces almost everything. It is as if just like planet Earth, in an advanced stage of degradation, the western music also needed a catharsis, a return to the natural state to be alble to breathe again. In 1999,three elements of the band, after a few years of a serious study of Mandinga percussion, went on a trip of around 3 months to Western Africa(Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and Marble Coast),where they met with a variety of new harmonies and rythms with an outstanding purity and simplicity.

African ground, learning from breed musicians as well as from the simple citizens. Before their return, they acquired a series of traditional instruments(built with natural raw materials) and learned the basics on how to play and build them.

Back to Lisbon, they carried on with the work they had started in Africa and following its growth the admission of 3 more elements from diverse musical backgrounds in a first stage and in the next year the last of the present 7 elements.

On the course of these 2 years the band has worked effectively to create its own warm and exotic sound with contagious performances in wich the public joins a trans-African trip ending up with a big party.

TERRAKOTA GERMINATES AN "ORGANIC MUSIC" ROOTED IN BLACK AFRICA, THAT ABSORBS SOUNDS FROM THE SAHARA, THE CARRABEAN, FROM THE INDIAS, THE WEST AND RISES ABOVE THE JAMAICAN SUN.

Crossings, internal and external journeys with no beginning or end, with no identity and with no passports ...... studies, assimilation, confronts, discovery of sources and roots linked together and with the planet .....
Synthesis, fusion, energy, passion, happiness, rhythms that mix cultures, languages and instruments directed towards the charkas represented by simplicity and well being ............ To listen, to reproduce, to reinvent, to recreate, to touch , to dance, to sing, to shout, to wake up minds that by obligation or choice are living in this "degenerating" world.
Years summed in the taste of this words to the sound of the music of TERRAKOTA in the many concerts given in big festivals or remote villages, in Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian lands ........

TERRAKOTA is "Fiesta", heat , colour, dream, rhythm and love. Because of their unique spontaneousness, this musicians like "melody chefs" make magic .... Playing with the mixture of sounds, rhythms and cultures natural to the Earth ..... every music a journey and every journey a music .... Ideas and positive vibrations are awakened in each and every listener during the concerts of this family .... A transmission of energies with no age, no idioms or defined styles, with open boarders and expired visas .....

For many years, nothing like this have been seen, a band without a recorded album able to drag an indestructible and loyal legion of fans
in BLITZ (PORTUGAL) Nov. 2001

The seven musicians of this group literally put the house down with their completely crazy "Mandigo Rock", where reggae mixes with the soukouss guitar, percussion and the ballafon with an energy worthy of the MANO NEGRA in African version in MONDOMIX (FRANCE) Jan. 2002

What the collective did was fantastic ... the theatre was transformed into an enormous dance floor, the atmosphere was contagious, inside the womb of Romi, even the baby must have been jumping..... TERRAKOTA are like a tree with a common trunk and several branches, all essential to the result in BLITZ (PORTUGAL) Nov. 2002
