Bio
The Terrantica group was born in Rome in autumn '96 from the union of six artists, coming from completely various experiences. Actors, rockers and minstrels joined by passion for folk music. Their attention has been soon concentrated on Italy’s mid-southern musical tradition, partly because of the origins of each member, partly because of the vastness of the material at disposal. Therefore the pieces proposed by Terrantica are above all saltarelli, pizziche, tarantellas and tammurriate.
The
approach to popular music is not of academic type although there has
always been a “study” on field, in small villages in the center
and south of Italy.
Spontaneity gets near to the real spirit of
the musical roots, in other words music is seen as a socialization
moment. Festivity and dance become so, the hinges of Terrantica’s
show.
The traditional pieces are performed in the classic known scheme, as well as in the group’s own arrangement.
The instruments, the group uses to play, are faithful to the tradition: Italian tambourines, tammorra (a bigger tambourine), chitarra battente (ancient type of guitar), classical guitar, diatonic accordion, zampogne (italian bagpipes), ciaramella (old breath instrument, calamus), flutes, castanets and some others...
