"Midwestern Tracks"

Terry Murphy is one of Detroit's hardest working musicians. On any given night, he can be found playing from Canada to Indiana. On "Freeborn Man," Murphy's tenor gives voice to a number of what might be considered "Irish Classic Folk," with a smattering of American songs. Murphy's love of the writing of Ewan MacColl is shown in his renditions of four of MacColl's songs, including the album title song.

The best of them is "The Moving On Song." Woody Guthrie's "Sacco and Vanzetti" gets a good showing. Murphy is joined by his producer, Leo Papa, on a number of songs, with Papa adding his backing bass or guitar. Overall, it is a nice excursion into song. - Irish American Post

Bio

Terry Murphy is an Irish balladeer, a walking encyclopedia of Celtic and traditional folk music. A fixture on the metro Detroit music scene since the 1980s, Murphy's lusty, rough-edged delivery and skillful technical artistry evoke a pathos and humor appreciated by his audience. With a thousand tunes at his command, he prefers those by the artists who have influenced him the most: the Clancy Bros. and Tommy Makem, the Dubliners, the bold Jimmy Crowley, Andy Irvine, Dick Gaughan, Robbie O'Connell and Christy Moore. Murphy's infectious good humor and obvious enthusiasm for the music he plays draws audiences into his performance; his entertaining yet informative intros enable a deeper appreciation of his music.
